Former Employee - Inventory Control Manager  in  Jefferson City, MO (US)
Former Employee - Inventory Control Manager in Jefferson City, MO (US)

I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

Good discount, a lot of flexibility with schedule if you have a good manager

Cons

After 10 years with the company I learned that it is all about your store manager. If you have a good manager, they do their best to shield their associates from the idiocy coming from the corporate offices. They also had a wage freeze in effect for about 3 years when I quit.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make smarter decisions, pay your people, and don't blame the little guys for the big guys mistakes. You can't cut labor back to nothing and still have everything get done.

I have been working at Hastings Entertainment part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Everyone except for my store manager is very kind and helpful. If you have a question, they don't hesitate to answer it. They try to help new employees get comfortable and fit in.

The floor associates and the associates up front have the attitude of a team, so things get done.

The discount on books is really nice.

    Cons

There really aren't any opportunities for advancement.

The manager has unreasonable expectations of associates. (e.g., You are the only associate in your department on Saturday night, and you are expected to stock three carts of merchandise while assisting customers and straightening, all in a five-or-so hour period.)

    Hastings is understaffed.

There is a rather large disconnect between what corporate thinks goes on in the stores and what actually goes on in the stores.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show some more appreciation for your employees, and try to bridge the gap between those in executive positions and those working the sales floor in the stores.

I worked at Hastings Entertainment full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Fun product, great customers, easy going co-workers. Awesome discount on Used product

    Cons

Upper management has made bad decisions since the company went public. There had been a 5 year wage freeze, but the CEO 's salary went from $880,000 to 1.2 million.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't give yourself raises when you can't do the same for the rest of the company.
