Pros

HDR is a large company that offers opportunities in architecture, engineering, and finance from many locations across North America.

Cons

As any large company, it may be hard to stand out and a lot of the job quality depends on the team and management you get.

I have been working at HDR full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Employee ownership really means something at HDR. The company seems to be well managed. HDR trains employees well, has good resources, and communicates well.

    Cons

My only significant challenges have been those that go with any consulting job: the need to generate work and stay billable. The employee experience will vary significantly depending on your home office. As you would expect, the larger offices generally are more formal and packed more densely. The many small offices can be less formal and you might even get an office with a door.

I worked at HDR full-time for more than a year

    Pros

HDR is a top 10 engineering company. It is well run, profitable corporation, with excellent compensation and benefits packages. Core values of the leadership are ethical and professional. The company is employee-owned resulting in a strong work ethic and shared rewards.

    Cons

The company weathered the recession, managing to the bottom-line by eliminating approximately ten-percent of its work-force. This wass done in multiple lay-offs and position eliminations, particularly for older, senior employees that were not fully billable, in areas where the recession hit the hardest . The positive spin put on this was that it created opportunities for younger, middle managers to move up and help with succession plan implementation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In most areas, the management should "stay the course", but separation packages and out placement services could be improved.
