Current Employee - Graduate Research Assistant in Atlanta, GA (US)

I have been working at Georgia Tech part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

This is a student assistantship that takes care of the tution and pays some stipend for daily expenses. The tution being waived is the biggest advantage.

Cons

The stipend is barely enough to pay the bills. Lot of work, very hectic, but its towards your own education.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your grad students like human beings please.

I have been working at Georgia Tech full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

the environment in general is friendly, and there are a lot of cross-disciplinary collaboration, the campus is big, the campus recreation center is really good, there are some nice new buildings, and Tech Square is really convenient - with shuttle to MARTA station that goes directly to airport

    Cons

different department have different culture and politics, like every place else. atlanta traffic is insane, fortunately midtown area where the campus is located is walkable with lots of restaurants. Tech Square does not have really cheap street food

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

take care of your new hires by giving them reduced teaching loads (or no teaching) for the first year to help them prepare grant writing and a good start-up package so they can hire graduate students to work on projects right away

I worked at Georgia Tech full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Given autonomy, and work scheduling flexibility

    Cons

Poor leadership structure or control, No long term or short term strategic plan, very poor communication, no authenticity in leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop "telling" the staff you care about the work they do, and start actually showing it, In the paycheck. Staff payroll increases totaling <3% in last 5 years. Faculty and administration, double digit increases.
