I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than an year)

Pros

great reputation, unlimited resources, and working with talented people

Cons

It is very stressful working as a postdoc in Genentech. The stress is not necessary from the boss, but probably comes from the initiatives to do great work.

I have been working at Genentech as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    surrounded by top talent
three weeks paid time off plus three weeks vacation
    stable
    gymnasium

    Cons

Not very many opportunities for title promotion. You could be there for 20 years and only be promoted twice; there just aren't very many levels. There are plenty of opportunities for pay increases, however.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

make time for feedback from lower-level employees; they often know about issues that are not obvious to upper mgmt

    I worked at Genentech full-time

    Pros

    • Still a highly profitable growth story in an industry with few left, though leveling out
    • Intellectually rich environment
    • A pretty open environment with opportunity to innovate
    • Heading in the right direction strategically
    • Great place for ambitious women

    Cons

    • "We can do it better than anyone" culture leading to continuous reinvention of the wheel in areas where little to no innovation is possible
    • Highly nepotistic environment in pockets with little regard for qualifications or suitability to level
    • Difficult to assimilate and penetrate existing cliques and preferred candidate networks (Longtime Genentech vs new to Genenetech)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

$100's of millions in zero ROI spend per year in commercial needs to be addressed rather than maintained for baseline...
