I have been working at Emory University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The pros of working in higher education, and specifically at Emory are the flexible schedule, the fact that you get national holidays off and internal candidates are given preference for most positions. Also the University provides a lot of alternative commuting options to faculty and staff and overall it is a progressive place to work for.

    Cons

Raises, specifically for staff, are not based on performance evaluations but on you initial salary - even if you transfer to a new department they will offer you a increase based on a formula. In that same vain, most departments are pretty flat, so if you want to advance you will more than likely need to leave your department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be nice to extend some of the same benefits to staff as you do faculty.

I worked at Emory University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Emory is filled with a diverse palate of wonderful people who really do good work for the university and in their lives. Of course there are "bastions of insanity" but there are also very good departments within the division of campus life and outside of it.

    Cons

As much as Emory touted their belief in life/work balance, there are several managers who do not believe in that. Even working from home one day a week, or trying to work a compressed work schedule ( in a non busy season) was frowned up. That sort of inflexibility and an unwillingness to meet their needs of their employees is tough to take! While there are always a few positions that won't be able to share in such options, it would be nice if managers tried to fight for their employees needs and found ways to meet them halfway. This would boost morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While there are always a few positions that won't be able to share in work/life balance options, it would be nice if managers tried to fight for their employees needs and found ways to meet them halfway.- especially when these are the same people who work their tails off during the academic year! This would boost morale and make Emory a great place to work again.
