Current Employee - Assistant Vice President - Back Office in New York, NY (US)

I have been working at Deutsche Bank full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Lots of room to identify issues and work independently to come up with solutions to fix the same. Issues are endless, so there is definitely a lot of room to work in this space.

Cons

Getting management to acknowledge the issue and agree on a plan for remediation that can be completed is definitely a difficult task. Many remediation projects get started, but few ever get finished.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold staff accountable for quality, and make sure staff completes work they are assigned.

I worked at Deutsche Bank as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Pay is good, as all IB's are.

    Cons

All the infamous downsides of banking are true here. Facetime, being called in on weekends / at all hours, associates yelling at people, lack of visibility / people getting credit for your work. Furthermore, exit opportunities are not all it's cracked out to be - positions at good VC's / PE firms (good meaning good hours) are very contested and generally only given to top analysts. Top meaning you got 1600 on your SAT and you are a genius, with or without social skills, or that you sucked up a lot and are a partner's pet. For the rest of the population, exit ops into corporate finance, business development, etc are not that different than if you worked for a management consulting firm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Facetime is stupid - let analysts sleep in the mornings while they are waiting for the next review / feedback cycle

I have been working at Deutsche Bank full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

There's always new work and initiatives to keep you busy; you will never be bored for long.

    Cons

Promotion is very hard unless you are in the US or UK. There is a lot of cronyism.

Financial governance is getting out of control, and it's becoming hard to even do simple things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure the we don't lose sight of pragmatism and efficiency when it comes to financial management, and nurture up-and-coming employees by promoting meritocracy.
