I have been working at Deloitte full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-You work with very smart and motivated people and dint usually have to carry anyone else's burden on your shoulders
-There's a lot of flexibility of thought and action - questions and innovation is encouraged
    - Lots of opportunities to learn, be mentored and mentor
    - More paid vacation, parental leave and other benefits than most firms offer
    - Flexibility options to dial your career up or down based on the current pace of your life
    - If you have the potential, leaders will take genuine interested in promoting you
    - Very robust performance evaluation process - Deloitte has clearly defined expectations from you. You will not ever feel like, "of well, i had no idea i was supposed to do that to get a 2!"
    - In such a large firm that does so many different things, its difficult not find anything that really interests you

    Cons

    - Travel is by far the biggest con. But thats more of an industry wide concern rather than Deloitte specific. Travel can really get hectic and depressing especially if you have a family or health reasons.
    - Too much emphasis on internal work: Deloitte prides its culture and uses internal events to keep its people together. Also, most consultants work on small projects with constantly changing teams. Hence internal work, office events do a good job as far as networking and really feeling a part of a big firm are concerned. However, trying to get involved in these activities, in addition to projects, means you end up working weekends. Not everyone can do that happily.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Find ways to reduce travel. In todays economy, selling no travel to a client should be easier, especially if the client is paying for it.
    - Provide at least partial utilization for internal work or work on office events.

Deloitte Federal chose revenue over brand

I worked at Deloitte full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great training, development, and some fantastic people

    Cons

Federal has gotten into the "butts in seats" model of doing useless work on site for federal organizations to drive up revenue. Has nothing to do with strategy, advisory services, or any other useful skill, and drove rates down and quality suffered. Also forced us away from true competitiors like McKinsey and some of the top firms, and down to typical government contractors. Quite unfortunate. You also end up with AERS and S&O selling very similar (but different of course) solutions to the same client. Walking somewhat of a fine line.

Your year end review is completely based off who you know and how you played the game. Has far less to do with your previous work and merit than one assumes, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but gets lost in the web that is the partnership. If you play the game for 2-3 PPDs, you may come to realize that at the end of the year, they didn't hold enough power, or weren't the right PPD to align to. Most counselors do not seem to understand this, and it becomes an 'every man for himself' environment with regards to promotions and career development. In addition, the inner circle takes care of itself through shared sales and revenue, allowing lower performers to be taken care of by those who control RTRAK (sp) by way of being the 'third manager / SM' who gets credit for the sale.

While Deloitte is still a fantastic firm, and one of the best places to START a career, especially coming out of the military or college, the game grows old on those who continually perform, and a number of strong managers and consultants have been heading for the door recently, and others are just waiting until bonuses to eject.

Bottom line: I found it to be too much BS and game playing for a marginal comp package.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on quality and returning the firm to what it should be, and what you sell it as to recruits.
