I have been working at Columbia University full-time for more than a year

Pros

* Vacation time is great
* Healthcare benefits are good
* Relaxed environment
* No Stress
* No Pressures

Cons

* You're basically going nowhere
* HR keeps changing benefits w/out notification
  --Tuition benefit has changed 5 times in the ONE year I've been ehre
* NO movement whatsoever
* Compensation SUCKS and they use "The Economy" as an excuse

Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have the resources to provide. If you want to keep talent, tuition incentives are a BIG deal.

    I have been working at Columbia University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    The academic intellectual environment here is untouchable. The depth of knowledge and ability to transfer and share information is astounding. Excellent place to learn lots!

    Cons

    Getting paid takes 6 weeks. Getting your health insurance, 6-8 weeks. Getting anything administrative done = 6-8 weeks. The people who are in charge of all of these duties seem to spend more time avoiding their jobs than they would spend if they actually _did_ them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop playing 'cover your ass' and make the people who work for you do their jobs.

    I have been working at Columbia University full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Working in the chemistry/physics field, the environment here is highly collaborative with access to a great range of valuable equipment. Salaries highly vary.

    Cons

    Ability is very dependent on the group you join. Your advisor may be completely inadequate to handle the responsibilities. Procuring items or dealing the the bureaucratic side very painstaking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Make bureaucracy more efficient.
