Former Employee - Systems Engineer in Mexico, Distrito Federal (Mexico)

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

You get to work in a place where you are able to do home office and manage your own time in order to bring results, so teleworking, videoconferencing, and high use of online collaborative tools is a must. As an engineer you will work with the latest technology in the networking industry, and will be involved with high profile customers.

Cons

As it continues to grow, it's becoming more and more bureaucratic. There are many processes in place to do almost every activity, and there's also an excess of surveys or polls to measure many of the aspects of work which is needed but when every area does this many times you spend a lot of your day just answering surveys. Lately, at the end of each FY there were major global restructurings which included layoffs, change in strategies, elimination of products/business units

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lower the amount of processes to allow for agile business doing or put tools and resources in place to off load this from field people. Monitor the dates and regularity of feedback in different areas to limit surveys and polls from many sources at one period of time.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time

    Pros

One can be at the bleeding edge of networking technology at Cisco as it is a market leader in most of the segments it operates in. It also has significant engineering, sales and marketing resources which enables it to solve complex problems for the customer.

    Cons

Cisco has merged and acquired teams for the past 30 years and while it has tried to keep the acquired teams together under their respective business units, it has allowed allowed the teams to develop into isolated silos. This has resulted in customers seeing inconsistencies across product lines. While Cisco is actively trying to fix this, it is an arduous process.
