Current Employee - Product Manager  in  Ottawa, ON
Current Employee - Product Manager in Ottawa, ON

I have been working at Avaya full-time for more than a year

Pros

Excellent people who have a great deal of expertise and professional capability across all functional areas.
Base salary is competitive, though bonus payments, - tied to business results- are rarely qualified for.

Cons

No long term vision of what the company wants to be or achieve. Immediate focus is on achieving a string of profitable quarters in readiness for a IPO and very little else. Cost cutting in the form of staff layoffs is occurring at the end of every Quarter leaving less do do the same amount of work.
Significant turn-over at senior levels leading to lack of consistent direction.
Very hierarchical structure with little to no empowerment to make decisions at lower levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't hire people unless you are sure you need them; don't let go people unless you are sure you won't need them :)

Not generating cash, so everything is limited

I have been working at Avaya full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Some of the co-workers are really great to work with.

    Cons

Some of the managers are really terrible to work for. (Some expect 70+ hours per week and at least 16 hours per weekend... it feels like a sweat shop.) The salary is bad. The company is not generating cash, so everything is limited... right now you need very senior approval to get supplies (pens and paper) so most employees are bringing in their own from home. The cafeteria was closed because it was too expensive, the free coffee was eliminated and the water coolers were scaled back by half because they were saving cash. Bonuses are always very meager, and with the cash situation have been reduced to zero. In past years, C level and higher were required to take two weeks unpaid furlough to help the company conserve cash. It feels like a pre-banrupt company... not unlike Nortel was (which a lot of the employees here were transferred over from the acquisition.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a clue... get real vision... we're investing in the wrong ideas at the wrong time. Late products with features no customer wants while cancelling extremely successful products with a very loyal customer base. A simple example of a bad decision: Avaya inherited a working IM platform from Nortel, it cancelled it, and now we have a Microsoft client on our desktops. We should have extended it to work on app platforms (like iPhone/iPad and Android) as well as on Mac and Linux.
