Good products, lousy company to work for

I have been working at Autonomy

Pros

Autonomy invests significantly in technology, but it would be hard to find a company that cared for its employees less than Autonomy.

Cons

Really a beat down culture. Senior leadership in Cambridge simply does not care about employees or customers for that matter, and it is obvious.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have been successful to date, however it is a common point of discussion amongst employees that the business model at Autonomy simply won't/doesn't scale.

    Thinking is discouraged.

I have been working at Autonomy

    Pros

The people at my office (who are mostly from pre-Autonomy acquisition - not much of a hint at my location) are smart and professional.

    Cons

Management by intimidation. Problem solving is discouraged. No chance for a raise = no motivation to work, other than, of course, the fear and intimidation and the off chance of getting fired. All decisions are made at UK headquarters, no matter which people/what product are affected by the decisions. Features are sold which don't exist yet, and then engineers are bulldozed into working crazy hours to throw some half-baked solution together on a short time frame, and then harassed when it doesn't work well, but not given the time to fix it, because surprise surprise, some new thing has been sold which doesn't exist yet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's not really advice to mgmt. Most mgmt feel like they have their hands tied, except upper mgmt who are self confident jerks. One comment in this forum isn't going to transmogrify the guys at the top into competence.

I have been working at Autonomy

    Pros

People tends to fall into a number of camps... those who've been here years; Those who've joined by acquisition and the remainder new hires. Needless to say those who've been here years fit like a glove... those by acquisition who then leave hate it and those who stay put up with it. New hires either love or hate it mainly dictated by age (not always but in the main).

    Cons

run on a tight budget and objectives (which is not a con) but the way its achieved is like boot camp in winter! OK if you're obsessive but stay away if not!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Loosen up and fly a little higher and share the profits a bit more with whole company instead of "stars"!!! Could do with more communications and less instructions
