I have been working at Edelman full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Edelman offers everything any entry-level worker could ask for from a large, established company: building and sharpening basic writing and professional skills, opportunities to network and establish meaningful professional relationships with clients, media and vendors across a wide range of industries, and a good balance of tasks requiring research, analysis, and creativity. Add to that an extensive worldwide network with opportunities for international transfer and exchanges, world-class thought leadership and IPs, and an inspiring global leadership team, Edelman truly stands out as a near perfect company for kick starting just about any career, related to PR or not.

    Cons

The hierarchical structure often influences work culture and the office in Shanghai has little to no interaction outside of work. Team bonding activities are rare, though teams do tend to be close after surviving insane stretches of late nights at the office. Compensation is minimal, but again, for an entry level position it could be worse. Lastly, though the lack of work-life balance is part of any agency's work culture, Edelman truly values delivering quality work to clients above all else, even if that means occasionally sacrificing the health of those providing the work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At the Shanghai office, more opportunities for mentorship would be greatly appreciated. Recent HR initiatives to encourage friendly competition between teams have received positive feedback as well as requests to amp up these sorts of campaigns.

I have been working at Edelman

    Pros

Edelman has good opportunities for growth if you are aggressive and push hard for advancement. It has a wide network of offices and specialty practices and managers are usually open to transfer requests. Company encourages professional growth and education. Employees are smart, dedicated, and hard working - everyone brings something unique to the table at Edelman and clients are served very well.

    Cons

Work is demanding, the hours are long and salaries are low compared to industry standards. Focus is on increasing profits. Easy to get lost in the company if you don't make the effort to network and stand out, there are plenty of others that can take your place. Company touts work/life balance but workloads and local managers don't support that. Day-to-day contact with local executives/GMs is very limited and they are not in touch with what's happening in local offices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Local executive management should provide more oversight to local senior management, encourage work/life balance.

    Pros

Great place to work for and some of the people are also great. Company offers a lot but you do have to stick out in order to be noticed.

    Cons

Leadership is not so communicative as they should be for a commination work place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be so shady and share information with all employees.

    Pros

Edelman is one of the few PR agencies in Brazil that really allows you to take part at a global network. You get to meet and work with incredible people from Edelman network around the world and attend leading companies of the industry.

    Cons

The office culture is fast-paced, you deal with a considerable amount of pressure and you are required to be multitasking, attentive and dedicated. You end up working extra hours, but that's standard for PR and comms market.

    I worked at Edelman

    Pros

    The benefits are amazing.
A lot of great people and a few MD's are incredible. All levels are approachable.
Do some really good work, and good clients.
Richard Edelman is a really inspiring and friendly leader.

    Cons

    Work life balance.
High and unrealistic expectations without the support and staff to do them - extremely stressful environment.
Fair pay for PR positions, but I know support staff are paid a lot lower than the industry average salary band.
Would only recommend to PR staff, and if they could cope with stress and not much recognition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more people, or people who can actually do the job. Don't race into decisions out of desperation.

Former Employee - Intern in Washington, DC (US)

I worked at Edelman as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Big clients- Hilton, Walmart, Pepse, Adobe, Dannon, etc.
Big office- many people to connect with and learn from
    In the heart of D.C.
Edelman Learning Institute classes- hearing from & meeting experts
Nice perks like endless coffee and ice cream on Fridays
Was paid $12.25 an hour + time and a half for over time.

    Cons

At least 30 interns any given week
Most of the time you are isolated from the "real" employees. All interns are sectioned off in rooms together.
    Work follows you home.
Not a steady rhythm- either stressed and pulling your hair out or bored and twiddling you thumbs.
Getting a full-time position mostly depends on timing, luck of the draw.
Lots of drinking in the office (maybe that is a pro to you though).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more feedback. Meet with interns regularly. Give the intern a written review at the end of their internship.
