I worked at Discovery Communications as a contractor

    Pros

They used to make some entertaining programming and it used to be cool to say that you worked for Discovery Channel, at it was back then.

    Cons

The shows on Discovery have changed though. The idea of making these shows is to create dramatic "real" programming at the cheapest possible cost, often while compromising employee safety.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start caring about the people that are actually making you money.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

This place is great to work at, the people, the culture, the benefits. In my time woking at Discovery, I have been provided with the training and tools to allow me to grow, as well as the motivation in yearly bonuses to stay committed to do better every year.

    Cons

You're never 100% happy with any job, but if I have to say that there's one thing I don't like about this company, it would have nothing to do with my job; I would like to get back the smart Discovery programming we used to have, and stop catering to the hillbilly audience. Again, that's just my own opinion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Watch Cosmos. Discovery should have done that, not NATGEO.

I have been working at Discovery Communications as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Culture is great. Easy to learn and move. The company truly invests in you if you make the investment in them. I have loved every minute at Discovery. Aton of career guidance and introductions are offered.

    Cons

Take advantage of everything offered as an intern. It seems like it is less accessible if you get hired full time regarding introductions and "special' treatment.

I worked at Discovery Communications as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

I worked as a temp, however, based on what I'd seen, it is very corporate with additional benefits as an entertainment environment.

    Cons

Typical corporate politics, however, very entertaining.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Discovery has great brands, most of which you can be proud to represent! The company is truly global, and there is a lot going on...everywhere. Benefits are strong, and the corporate culture is almost great.

    Cons

The company is almost great. Unfortunately, the gap between good and great doesn't seem to ever close. The emphasis on making it great for the employees will likely never be there as long as the financial results remain strong and people stay put. If it ain't broke...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider sharing the successes of the company with those who deliver the success. If not with money, with more complete programs that are actually supported by all levels.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Number one media company in the world. Work with the most creative people in the business. Company has outstanding benefits and great work environment. Always something fun going on. Great resume booster and where you work will always be a dinner party conversation topic.

    Cons

So many people want to work there and are willing to undercut on salary that the pay is significantly lower relative to what you can make at a less prestigious company. Pay isn't everything and it's a great place to work. Just don't expect to be jumping into a basement full of gold coins like Scrooge McDuck from DuckTales.

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Strong Leadership. Great focus and a leader in the international cable market. Forward thinking. Great people and a fun environment to work.

    Cons

Limited growth opportunities in the regional markets. Not a lot of opportunity to advance once at a certain level. A lot of change in the IT/Digital area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the focus on growth and innovation and make sure to involve employees at all levels.

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great company, looks good on resume.

    Cons

Keep your head down, do your job and don't ask too many questions - then you'll have a a job for a many years with no prospect for a promotion. The company feels so big that no one is paying attention or looking out for the little guy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting your friends and reward good employees.
