A culture of arrogance and ignorance.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Discovery Communications as a contractor

ProsThey used to make some entertaining programming and it used to be cool to say that you worked for Discovery Channel, at it was back then.

ConsThe shows on Discovery have changed though. The idea of making these shows is to create dramatic "real" programming at the cheapest possible cost, often while compromising employee safety.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart caring about the people that are actually making you money.

I worked here for over 8 years and loved it

Writer/Producer (Former Employee)

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 8 years

ProsI was given so many great opportunities - from growing in my career to having a great work/life balance. This company leads the pack. Now after working at other networks, it's amazing how technologically advanced this company is.

ConsEvery few years it seems like they layoff a great bunch of talented people

Some of the best and the worst all in one place

Coordinating Producer (Former Employee)
Silver Spring, MD (US)

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe benefits were great, the pay was great, there were always fun activities and things happening, the on-site health clinic was awesome. There were some very smart and talented people in the building. One of the best parts was being able to tell people you worked for Discovery, it's such a well loved brand.

ConsIt often felt like a prison. If you were not working at night, over the weekends, on your vacation days, and even while home sick, you might be considered slacking. At the same time, you are surrounded by people who are not doing their job or doing much of anything. Lots of "lifers" settle into the comfort of the corporate environment and somehow get promoted into director or VP spots without actually knowing much or having much talent.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop re-organizing the company every 6 months. I was there for 3.5 years and worked under 5 different managers due to corporate restructuring and layoffs. Give people and ideas time to grow and develop instead of cutting off potential at the first sign of weakness. Stop cultivating an environment of fear where people get rewarded for doing nothing more than being able to survive the insanity long enough.

It was a good work-life balance, but not challenging enough

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Discovery Communications part-time

ProsGreat location/easy commute with metro
Very flexible work hours for full time students
Awesome company, with access to a huge media network

ConsNot much emphasis on career development
Not enough challenging projects
No commuter reimbursement

Advice to Senior ManagementMost Interns commute from DC, which ends up being about $7 a day in metro fares or $80+ per month of parking in your garage. Consider reimbursing students who car-pool or take the metro.

Discovery takes advantage of younger employees paying lower salaries.

Producer/Editor (Former Employee)
Silver Spring, MD (US)

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 10 years

ProsCompany has great name recognition. It was once a very fun filled company but has since grown to strictly value ratings and bottom line over the value of its core which is employees.

ConsThe company has become so very corporate that it has lost its spirit and failed to celebrate the most important resource - the employees.

Terrible management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time

Prosgood benefits, good pay, flex hours.

ConsManagement has absolutely no idea what they are doing. Basically the prototypical bad managers who are knowitalls who dont share any information, dont lead their employees and dont encourage growth or development. After positions opened up offering opportunities for lateral career development, I was informed through hearsay that the director did not want to fill these positions from within the company. There is no possibility of career advancement, despite much lip-service being paid to it.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a management class.
