Former Employee - Technical Leader in Bangalore (India)

I worked at Delphi full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible Timings, Nice work-life balance, OK for personal growth and satisfaction. Good and challenging technical work if you are in right team. Again, good onsite opportunities in the right team.

    Cons

In most of the cases, pay Appraisal depends on your relation ship with manager and not your hard work. Seniors try to suppress freshers as there is less growth and people get stuck in same position for long time.

Current Employee - Engineer - Electronics Design in Singapore (Singapore)
Current Employee - Engineer - Electronics Design in Singapore (Singapore)

I have been working at Delphi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-challenging electronics design and development working environment
-above market average salary for junior and intermediate engineers.
    -lots of internal training/development provided.
-lots of lesson learnt database and design guidelines and standard available for reference.
-good annual leave entitlement and employee sign-up bonus (may not be available now).

    Cons

-Delphi Singapore is already 35 years old with very stagnant workforce and too many managerial positions. As a result, it's a high cost design centre.
-working levels resources are freezed and engineers need to juggle several projects.
-project/top management has the upper power in influencing the company decision making based on cost instead of technical know-how and feasibility. Basically, Delphi values employees with leadership and management skills instead of in-depth technical skills. This can be seen in promoting non-competent managers (with no proven/known technical background/knowledge).
-micro-management can been seen in certain departments.
-professionalism and 'phor'fesionalism (apple polishing) attitudes are valued but 'phor'fesionalism takes the precedence.
-lack of top level management decision making due to 'error-phobia' mindset. Afraid to make mistakes and wrong decision. Engineers are criticized heavily if not able to decide quickly.
-Recent market share (powertrain, sensors, Body safety and chassis) decreased to 4% according to last year's survey (Bosch 20%, Continental 20%, Denso 11%, there are several others with 4%).
-too customers centric to the extent some confidential information given to customers. Customers-friendly attitude is always seen as good for Delphi Singapore (which is often wrong).
-information flow is bad as there are many parties trying to be 'Single-point contact' in gathering information and showing leadership skills but lack of in-depth technical skills to solve problem down to the root cause.
-3 Legged 5 Whys is overrated and overemphasized whenever problems happened.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-reflect your management styles or wait for the worst to come.
-technical paths for engineers need to be preserved instead of reduced as it is the core problem solving skills and resources for the future of Delphi.
-live up to your 7 Absolutes of Excellence or we are doomed.

I have been working at Delphi as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Delphi assigns high priority and must-ship features to the interns. The intern program, although new, is strong and improving every year. Delphi is positioned to be successful in the future and the internship program they have reflects their desire to search for the best candidates.

    Cons

Management is lacking, although they did just finish a reorg so there will be a few years of ramp up before the company will regain it's full productivity. The work is slow in comparison to tech companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Had a recent reorg, no comment.

    Growing Company with Stagnant Employee

Current Employee - Manufacturing Engineer in Singapore (Singapore)

I have been working at Delphi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Company outlook not bad, although growth is limited due to keen competition. It has great (although sometimes cumbersome) system with countless procedures and lesson learnts. Excellent work-life balance, as long as you can provide a backup.

    Cons

Aggresive cost cutting may means removal of redundant head count. In the rapidly-changing automotive industry, if you are not working on key products, it is easy to be redundant. Less career advancement opportunity, especially at high-cost site. Job rotation is also non-existant, due to middle management facing difficulty getting new/replacement headcount approval. Many long-serving employees (from the previous GM's time) who are very unproductive but somehow still able to safely collect their paycheck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote more career advancement and job rotation optiona. The tool is already established but in "survival mode", each department may choose not to rotate/promote employee just to keep the status quo.

I worked at Delphi full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Diverse employment opportunities and a broad product line.

    Cons

Terrible upper management. Management practices during past several years have sapped the money out of the lower level workers and transferred it to the pockets of the Corporate staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If your job keeps you in meetings all day and you do not interface with the "cubicle workers" on a daily basis, then you are contributing nothing to the company and you should leave.

    Pros

Informal working environment, quite relaxed. Good work/life balance.

    Cons

Lack of HR support. Mobility within the group limited (HR managed locally)
Everything feel like the individual employee come second (or third, or even more) in order of priority
Feel like the company is managed week by week, no long term vision/investment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your people, or you are going to loose them...

I worked at Delphi full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The company provided significant opportunities to grow and diversify job positions when the auto economy was strong.

    Cons

As the overall economy weakened and specifically the automotive market fell off - There were significant downsizing and reductions in workforce - requiring the remaining team members to pick up those responsibilities in addition to their previous assignments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide a vision, become a part of the team, and lead them to where the company needs to go. Many hands make light work!

I have been working at Delphi as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

The people at Delphi are wonderful to work with, and there are always some very exciting innovations taking place. Delphi provides benefits to all its full-time employees and provides training to keep employees up-to-date on safety and new technology. Many employees have families and healthy work-life balances. Also, it is a global company, so there are plenty of opportunities to travel.

    Cons

As a younger member of the professional community, I would like to see a more aesthetically pleasing work environment. The company provides suitable work equipment, but the cubicle walls look a bit outdated; it's basically just your average office, so a nice change to stand out would be nice.

I worked at Delphi full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

If you are willing to work hard for descendent pay in Western New York, Delphi was is good partner. Nice work/life balance. Having the Union there kept management in line and made sure we were paid fairly and got the rights we deserved.

    Cons

Company was pretty unstable during the chapter 11. Management seemed distant since it became part of GM again. Had to go toe to toe with managers at times. Union guys were made to feel like we were the enemy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Treat Union workers better.
