Rewarding for many years, but disappointing after emerging from bankruptcy.

Senior Project Manager (Current Employee) Kokomo, IN (US)

ProsChallenging front end technology development. Workforce still in place is very experienced and been reduced to only the high performers of 10 years ago when the corporation was larger.

ConsContinual short term focus on financials and bleeding very experienced talent. Has great challenges in today's marketplace to win new business two grow. Due to continual downsizing, potential for career growth is stagnant or reversed at best.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Talented People Interesting Products, and engaging problems to solve

Senior Electrical Engineer (Current Employee) Kokomo, IN (US)

ProsGreat group of smart people working in small teams. Everyone is always willing to contribute and listen to advice.

ConsNot diversified enough to ride through the ups and downs in the auto industry. Managers expect an unrealistic amount of overtime at no pay.

Advice to Senior ManagementSacrifice of core competency during down turns effects the ability to execute when things turn around.

Avoid this company, especially the Kokomo division.

Electrical Engineer (Former Employee) Kokomo, IN (US)

ProsLots of interesting projects to work on.

ConsTreated like a number. When quarterly results aren't good, management cuts expenses by getting together to decide who they can fire next. Older workers and those that are on sick or pregnancy leave are especially targeted. Management hides this by getting the workers to sign legal releases to prevent them from suing before they will give them any severance money.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your older workers humanely. They have invested much of their lives to help out your company, and now that they are near retirement, you are dumping them on the job market at an age when they will have a difficult time finding another job. You expect loyalty from your employees yet you are not being loyal to them.

Severe "Brain Drain" Has Crippled Former Technology Powerhouse

Senior Electrical Design Engineer (Current Employee) Kokomo, IN (US)

ProsSome of the most brilliant engineers I've ever worked with until the company was taken over by the hedge fund owners. A technology leader that has fallen due to the exodus of the many of the most talented.

ConsConstant layoffs, forced retirements, continual salary and benefit cuts, terminated pension plan employees in their 40's and 50's with huge losses to make up in the short time remaining before retirement. Horrible Morale due to employees being viewed as disposable liabilities. Systematically bleeding US locations to death while moving the work offshore.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange your attitude toward your workforce. Morale will not improve until they see that you have a plan to grow the company and value the contributions of a talented workforce.

Employment at Delphi in Kokomo IN

Logistics Analyst (Former Employee) Kokomo, IN (US)

ProsSalary was great and people were wonderful to work with.

ConsDelphi's human assets were once regarded by management as the biggest competitive advantage that the company possessed but, since the bankruptcy and the emphasis on the bottom line employes seem to be regarded as a liability. Many talented people crucial to the success of the company have been released. It seems that management is mortgaging the future in favor of immediate bottom line results.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement focus should be more on long range success.

Company doing well in spite of management.

Senior Engineer (Current Employee) Kokomo, IN (US)

ProsWorking for a major automotive supplier.

ConsNo longer USA based. Based in Europe. Outsourcing of US salaried jobs to Eurasia. R&D is virtually gone. Rely on suppliers R&D.

    Advice to Senior ManagementLeave.

ProsThis is a place where you learn to be efficient and optimize activities to meet deadlines, competitive industry

ConsDemanding customers and industry, lots of standards to comply with, manufacturing rules over engineering more than necesary

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to be smarter in working closer with customers, need better account managers and intel to win business

Great technical people, adequate tech leadership, marginal strategic vision.

PowerTrain Software Engineer (Former Employee) Kokomo, IN (US)

ProsThe engineers are by and large bright and hardworking. I worked in Powertrain Software and the engineers understand both real time embedded programming, and automotive engine and transmission operation in detail. If you are a motor head and a programmer you might really enjoy this job. A word of warning... testing automotive software is more of a job than writing it.

ConsManagement skills varied from super competent to somewhat competent. It's unclear what the requirements are to be a manager, but it was not always being a good engineer. A couple guys I thought must have been frat guys, they waved their hands and said buzzwords, but when you tried to explain a technical issue their eyes glazed over. Regardless, there are some really sharp managers there.
