It sucked. Really hard.

Dairy Queen Blizzard Wizzard (Former Employee)
Ottawa, ON

I worked at Dairy Queen part-time for more than 3 years

ProsNone. Except that there's absolutely no responsibility felt by those employed their to be the "best they can be". I need to write twenty words. Am I there yet? Yes.

ConsTerrible pay, hard work for nothing. Management sucks. Staffed by high school drop-outs who don't know a thing about anything, really. My manager stole from my boss and she was also mean.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay more money to employees.

Meh

Front Line/Cashier (Former Employee)
Chatham, ON

I worked at Dairy Queen part-time for more than 3 years

ProsIt's awesome being able to make your own blizzard creations, and overall making ice cream for people is a pleasant experience!

ConsWorked here for 3 years and never had any promotion opportunities, and the owners/managers were not pleasant. Don't work here if you want steady hours, there are plenty in the summer but barely any in the winter.

Good entry level place to work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Dairy Queen part-time for less than a year

Pros- Good training
- Nice people to work with
- Free ice cream during training, and 50% off everything otherwise! Woohoo

Cons- Part-time work, schedules can vary from week to week
- New hires always get closing shift and bathroom cleaning duties, but its not too bad.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep being nice and hiring nice people! It makes all the difference for employees and customers.

It was VERY hard work for VERY little pay

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Dairy Queen

ProsThere were amazing people that I got to meet everyday and my coworkers were easy going.

ConsI got paid very little (below min wage) to train other employees, open, close, clean heavily and go above what was expected.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees kindly

Good overall experience

Shift Leader (Current Employee)
Scarborough, ON

I have been working at Dairy Queen part-time for more than 3 years

ProsReally laid back environment, was given a lot of freedom and gained a lot of work experience. Worked at a seasonal location that only sold cold products so we were only open March-November. The only time of the year it was busy though was June-September. So it was a pretty relaxed environment for majority of the year.

ConsWhen the weather is good, it gets SUPER busy. On the contrary, if it is cold or raining it is dead.

Good times, paid for my tuition.

Manager (Current Employee)
Ottawa, ON

I have been working at Dairy Queen part-time for more than 10 years

ProsFlexible hours and the opportunity to advance to management provided useful, real life managerial experience. Good staff and made some good friends. It is a good first job or a good job to have throughout university or college.

ConsSome of the managers had over inflated egos and were looking to save money at the customers expense and would have power trips. Some of the customers could be rather rude and offensive at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider reviewing the performance of some of the managers.

been working here for four years, terrible pay, terrible hours, terrible terrible.

Dairy Queen (Former Employee)
Surrey, BC

I worked at Dairy Queen part-time for more than 3 years

Pros-met some of my greatest friends.
-got a lot of free stuff
-you can have piercings/look 'alternative'
-gave me a back bone when it comes to rude customers
-get to yell and swear at customers without being afraid of being fired

Cons-always getting minimun wage
-terrible shifts (only get like one shift a week, despite my begging)
-boss uses favouritism
-crap pay
-incredibly rude customers (but that could just be the area)
-boss hiring too many high school kids and cutting other peoples hours
-boss never listens to the needs of employees
-no room to grow, supervisors only get a .25 cent raise for double the duty
-just dont work at this dairy queen
-too little pay for all the work we do
-boss needs to be a bit more strict on flaky employees
-the uniform is ugly
-kids from the high school across the street are disgusting, messy and stupid
-if it's a rainy day, they call you and cancel your shift, no questions asked
-little training
-unprofessional

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease give the people who were working here the longest a raise above minimum, supervisors should be getting paid at least 12$/hr. It's ridiculous. Stop hiring so many people when you can't even give the current employees proper hours.
