I have been working at Costco Wholesale as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Great place to work for students. The people are friendly and they teach you everything you need for work. The starting wage is pretty good too.

    Cons

There aren't many Cons but if I were to name one, the work place is very busy all the time.

I have been working at Costco Wholesale part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

For a retail job the pay is great, the hours are nice (this can depend on manager though) and many of the employees are quite happy. You have the potential to make significantly more money than most retail jobs. It is definitely a "work to live" place where employee's wellbeing is often put above making a few extra cents.

    Cons

There are periods of the year where holidays are not permitted (though this is standard at many retail locations). Since many promotions are based on work ethic, and there ends up being some managers who are excellent workers but not good at managing other people and paperwork.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't fall into the MBA-style purely number-based metrics trap, keep focusing on happy customers and employees. It seems like that type of thing is slowly creeping into the company. I've experienced having a department fall apart because upper management told the department manager that their sales were not high enough for the amount of staff they had and cuts had to be made resulting in the staff barely being able to keep up with demand.

I worked at Costco Wholesale part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Wages promised in future. Start out low wages and terrible hours then if you stick around for the brass ring at least 2 years you may eventually be rewarded

    Cons

Terrible management and training. Too many favorites played. Need to follow management directives exactly and bow down or you will never get promoted. Some of the work is totally demeaning like playing pseudo security guard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Good luck

I have been working at Costco Wholesale part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great people, I really enjoy working there because my co-workers make the job easier by being so friendly and happy. Great benefits.

    Cons

When applying for a promotion or another position, they consider more your seniority then your qualities.
Terrible schedules: you'll only know your schedule less than a week prior and you'll work EVERY SATURDAY AND SUNDAY ALL DAY until you get a full time position, which may take more than 2 years!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think management should be more considerate and thoughtful about their employees. I have two kids and I would like to have a weekend day off once in a while. If they were more considerate they would offer rotations on weekends, once they really don't need all employees at the warehouse all day on weekends. Very often you come to work and they "ask" you to go home because they are cutting hours.

    Pros

Lots of opportunities for cross-training and advancement. Above-average pay and excellent benefits. Your hard work is noticed.

    Cons

Not a place for lazy or unmotivated people. If you don't pull your weight, you won't last.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should spend a little more time on the floor.
