I worked at Costco Wholesale full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay is one of the best in Retail. Management as a whole is very experienced and the stores run very efficiently. Majority of employees are outstanding.

    Cons

No work life balance. As per all U.S. based companies the company comes first. Managers should expect 50+ hours per week. Due to the high volume of business you can also expect an abnormal amount of problems you will have to deal with daily. Limited advancement due to slow store growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of your middle managers as they have the greatest effect on your day to day operations.

    Pros

Very flexible with students. Allows students to go away from school and to return to work when they return to home. Friendly, approachable management. Lots of flexibility with trading shifts and such. Free costco membership.

    Cons

Difficult to move up in ranking. A very busy job, keep you on a tight leash in terms of breaks, and arriving on time. Very by the book, and difficult to change anything.

Calling it a day on the call center

Former Contractor - Call Center Agent in Ottawa, ON
Former Contractor - Call Center Agent in Ottawa, ON

I worked at Costco Wholesale as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

-competitive wages less experienced workers will see normal wages relative to any job market
-tools, training and equipment in great standing
    -subsidized food, employee consumer perks

    Cons

-very high work demand. Call center agents are expected to reach above 75 calls a shift. Meaning 1-3 minute calls every 1-3 minutes.
-strict clock in and out procedures, miss a clock-in by 30 seconds more than 3 times a month and it's a written warning
-no benefits for contract workers so you have to go in and avoid sick days at all costs. *time idling it monitored so too much sick bathroom time can lead to written warnings*
-lack of post employement referencing and achievement records

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Not everyone is going to want a life with Costco, many students rely on large companies to build their own work experience foundations and skills to move on. Restricting references leaves long term workers on the hook for zero recognition unless within the company.

    - Aim to hire more employees to lower call answering and call duration standards asap and adapt current goals. It would greatly increase productivity as more people would realistically be able to reach goals set by management thus giving individuals a stronger sense of success and achievement.

-The environment for the call center is very boot-camp-like at best. Supervisors patrol walk ways and stalk workers in an effort to constantly crack down on even the slightest sign of slowed productivity or deviation.
you are given a half cut cubicle, so by then you will have zero workplace privacy at that point

    Pros

Great place to work for students. The people are friendly and they teach you everything you need for work. The starting wage is pretty good too.

    Cons

There aren't many Cons but if I were to name one, the work place is very busy all the time.

I have been working at Costco Wholesale part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

For a retail job the pay is great, the hours are nice (this can depend on manager though) and many of the employees are quite happy. You have the potential to make significantly more money than most retail jobs. It is definitely a "work to live" place where employee's wellbeing is often put above making a few extra cents.

    Cons

There are periods of the year where holidays are not permitted (though this is standard at many retail locations). Since many promotions are based on work ethic, and there ends up being some managers who are excellent workers but not good at managing other people and paperwork.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't fall into the MBA-style purely number-based metrics trap, keep focusing on happy customers and employees. It seems like that type of thing is slowly creeping into the company. I've experienced having a department fall apart because upper management told the department manager that their sales were not high enough for the amount of staff they had and cuts had to be made resulting in the staff barely being able to keep up with demand.

I worked at Costco Wholesale part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Wages promised in future. Start out low wages and terrible hours then if you stick around for the brass ring at least 2 years you may eventually be rewarded

    Cons

Terrible management and training. Too many favorites played. Need to follow management directives exactly and bow down or you will never get promoted. Some of the work is totally demeaning like playing pseudo security guard.
