Management means nothing

Night Merch (Former Employee)
Abbotsford, BC

I worked at Costco Wholesale as a contractor for less than a year

ProsFree membership, and good student program.

ConsThe salary for night merch, is very low to compensate for all the physical work that gets put into it. If there is a mistake in how a merch was stocked the closes person to the merchandise get blame whether that person did it or not. The same goes for great work done, you have to be at the right location at the right time, so many times somebody else gets credited for you work.

At the time that I had my 30 day review, in one section it states that I was expected to better learn the deadlines of the warehouse, but two sections below it would state that I worked in a face pace manner and very efficient, so at the end it was really confusing, and the manager that presented the review couldnt comment as he wasnt the one that wrote it. Also, in the review it states that I should be asking more questions and get involve in more responsibilities. That same day I asked an assistant manager if product was to be moved as per the floor plan, the assistant manager states that I should be doing what he asked and nothing else, the impressive thing was that he was the same manager that presented and read to me my review.

Manager was overlook by assistant manager and by employees, manager would just role her eyes and laugh it out while everybody would walk all over her. Really not impress by this, and when I commented all the issues with other employees, they mentioned that that is the way it is and its better just to watch for the managers.

At the end, manager share that she would keep me permanent after the season ended, a week later while she was on vacation, the assistant manager pulls me aside at the end of my shift and tells me that my last day in the company is in 2 days, as well I was encourage to apply in two months.. Not very impress, and no further contact from manager to explain or at least apologize for the previous information.

I know my experience is a reflection of this location only, and that other location do not share the same issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement skills are not those that make the managers work faster, but those that create a culture of job satisfaction and pride each employee cares about his/her job and the company. From all the employees I talked to, all of them stay cause they have tenure and have a good salary, but they are not impress with management.

Good starting experience.

Front End Assistant (Current Employee)
Vancouver, BC

I have been working at Costco Wholesale part-time for more than a year

ProsFlexible schedule for students, enables you to balance classes and work. Hourly rates are more than minimum wage. Friendly work environment.

ConsLabour is very physical and you must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather. Sweeping shifts (by rotation) to clean the parking lot were also recently implemented. Promotions and other job opportunities are based on seniority.
