Awesome place to work but can be really stressful when other people aren't doing their work.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at City of Edmonton full-time

ProsThe work hours can not be beat! Good benefits and very flexible.

ConsThere is a lot of politics, management doesn't get involved to help lower management deal with problem co-workers, the union and management always protects the useless lazy workers.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet involved and help lower management deal with problems around the office. A lot of times difficult co-workers won't listen to anybody till it comes from the head honcho.

Stress Filled

Foreman (Current Employee)
Edmonton, AB

I have been working at City of Edmonton full-time for more than 5 years

ProsBenifits for the family, pay chueqe never bounces, some of your co-workers turn into family and will always care for you and have your back

ConsFull of political nonsense, management looks out for management, the union looks out for management, HR looks out for management, full of drama if you don't buy the bosses coffee you are replaceable and expendable, the bosses have there favorites who get anything in the world, otherwise you are paid from the neck down

Advice to Senior ManagementRetire and let someone who cares take your place and fix things

Avoid if you're a contractor

Systems Analyst II (Former Employee)
Edmonton, AB

I worked at City of Edmonton as a contractor for less than a year

ProsFriendly atmosphere, and nice people. Hours are the same as full-time staff; hence, the work-days are just the right length.

ConsCity has to appease the union...contractors are let go frequently. The goal is to limit contractors to 6 months or less...preferably less. As a result the politics can be bad. The pay is less that what you can make elsewhere too.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide more feedback to contractors.

Scope to have more life work balance

Technician (Current Employee)
Edmonton, AB

I have been working at City of Edmonton full-time for more than 3 years

ProsJob security, good life work balance scope to increase your knowledge and skill

Conslow pay and too many deductions make the same wage as a 1st year apprentice in the private sector. Pension benefits are low to retiring employees. pension scheme not very transparent plans to increase retirement age to 67 years

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow vertical progression of lower employees too many road blocks for promotions.

Challenging and lots of opportunities to make an impact

Electrical Engineer (Current Employee)
Edmonton, AB

I have been working at City of Edmonton full-time for more than 5 years

Pros-Very flexible work schedule with every third Friday off
-Able to bring in lots of new technology
-Excellent support from management (at the branch level)

Cons-Capital budgets are becoming more restrictive and the ability to introduce new technology quickly is less likely
-No real consistent career path unless you want to move into management and away from a technical role
-No way to plan as one cycle your may have a tsunamai of funds and the next nothing

Advice to Senior ManagementReturn to the every second Friday off for management staff and create an engineering ladder that more accurately lines up with APEGA.
