Former Employee – worked at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia full-time
Pros – 1 The mission of treating Children is an honorable and wonderful job to feel accomplishment.
2 Great benefits especially the healthcare when you need it.
3 work with some of the leaders in healthcare and medicine
Cons – 1 often those leaders are a bit eccentric and have special needs that are a bit unusual
2 HR is dysfunctional and often the employee does not get the right information on benefits and policies especially seen in situations such as long term disabilities due to surgery.
Became a way for CHOP to replace me
3 Department run by a 30 year veteran of the company who was a tyrant and people especially the newly hired people feared him. He overmanaged and was critical of some areas and forgot some areas and did not want to address any of the issues in areas that he felt had no importance,
4 Turnover was very high but they had about a 10% yearly replacement rate in the department.
5 Employee with many years were forced out by not accepting managements changes yearly to a 5S and lean philosophy even for medicines imagine Techs has 30 sec to make doses and were timed on this
6. The senior managers accepted and performed his policies but were more tolerant to employees
Advice to Senior Management – The healthcare field is in chaos about being reimbursed for the good work of hospitals like CHOP in an area that many do not pay. Changes to accomplish fiscal goals constrain services often affecting departments like HR. and other services however it does add to the chaos and quality of services that affect employee performance. Somebody. Outside of the department and their senior management has to look at the plans for reducing costs and see that it does not have lasting effects on the care, employee retentivity and represent a beat the clock program especially in a critical area like pharmacy. Somebody should be inspecting the department manager and the manner they manage their people old tyrannical fear driven management will not retain professionals nor will the power of some research departments that because of their monitary contribution to this hospital wield more power and demands to other service departments.

Former Employee – worked at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as an intern for less than a year
Pros – CHOP is a great place to work for a great cause. The benefits are reasonably good, the managers are competent and actually listen to you. The people are nice and knowledgeable with many years of experience.
Cons – It's not the best place for someone to start the career. It's great if you want to retire, but as with any established institution, things could move slowly
Advice to Senior Management – Provide feedback more often

Former Employee – worked at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as an intern for more than a year
Pros – Working for CHOP is rewarding based on the mission of the hospital. It is flat out the best Children's Hospital in the world. I had an internship there and I loved it. I learned a lot and I would have gone back if I didn't get tied up with long term research at school.
Cons – It is often very tiring, which I was fine with most of them time, but sometimes you just want to sit on your ass, finish desk work, and drink coffee on a Friday. Sometimes difficult to have your voice heard as an intern

Pros – Knowledgeable coworkers who work hard to get job done
Cons – No standards or process in place. Require running in circle to get certain things done
Advice to Senior Management – Chop has some talented workers in the IT side of the house but there are a lot of lifers who need to reminded that their jobs are not god given and need to reprimand accordingly

Pros – Conflict free environment, flexible hours, driven coworkers, constant opportunities to attend lectures and network.
Cons – lunch options are limited and on-site cafeteria of fresh food is expensive
Advice to Senior Management – Lectures, from grand rounds to guest researchers, were well-publicized and I greatly valued the flexibility to periodically attend these events. They were inspiring and a great opportunity to network with faculty at other campuses.
