I worked at CarMax full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Training is effective and you are accepted not coming from the industry of car sales.

    Cons

Management couldnt care less about your growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop caring so much about your bonus entering your pockets every night. Help your newer consultants more, Dont just cram them in the e office when they dont do things correctly

I worked at CarMax full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pleasant work environment. Everyone treats everyone with respect and is nice (for the most part, at least at my location). Lots of little nice things the company does for the employees. High focus on giving employees recognition, which I found very positive and still seems to be rare to find. After working there for 4 years and leaving for a better paying job, I really missed the positive working environment. Lots of areas to move around in, can go from sales to finance office, move up the ladder, plenty of opportunities for growth. Open door policy.

    Cons

Some managers get a little bit too comfortable in their jobs and may not set the best example at times. Needs a more uniform approach. Some managers work way harder then others, or some may be much more approachable then others. Pay structure for sales people could use some serious improvement. Can be very stressful to maintain adequate sales to live from.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Setting a good example for your employees, practice what you preach. Don't make assumptions, ask more questions and listen more to what employees are saying.

I have been working at CarMax full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

All tools are provided. Hourly pay instead of flat rate. They actually pay overtime. Great benefits.

    Cons

Possible long stretches of overtime but that means significantly more money so it's not so bad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some higher ups could connect better with production techs. A few do really great, more just stay away.

I have been working at CarMax part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Great benefits
    Good pay for part time.
    Business experience
    Opportunity to move up

    Cons

    Competition
    Dealing with difficult customers
    Leaving later than expected

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to lie about other dealerships. Give us the facts and the tools to overcome those issues.
Focus on who is hired for management. I witnessed some deserving individuals get passed over for some who hid but made their numbers look good.

I have been working at CarMax full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great place to work for. They provide uniforms. And the benifits are great. They train you and you can go as far as you want.

    Cons

Painters have to start at the bottom and work their way up. But there is plenty of opportunities to grow.

I have been working at CarMax part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Generally speaking, there is usually "that person" at work that you can't stand. At the Easton location in Columbus, OH, that person doesn't work there. Very positive, supportive environment.

    Cons

The work/life balance is not the best. Also, there are broad structures and practices that are might have seemed efficient in a small sampling that do not work out applied with a broad corporate brush stroke.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the underlings more. Top down isn't effective if you are deaf to what's happening at the bottom. Especially when considering different locals and populations across the country.
