Fairfax, VA (US)

Former Employee – worked at CGI Federal full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe reason you work at CGI Federal is because you want to advance your career in IT and appreciate your work life balance. CGI Federal is a great company to work for, large enough that they can be flexible without having you feel just like a number.

ConsOpportunity to work outside of the Federal government contracts. Being in the Federal space it is difficult to get experience in the corporate side of the business (CGI and CGI Federal are separate companies).

Advice to Senior ManagementMove people around more and give the younger members more responsibilities.

ProsThis job affords both vets and non-vets to support the US military in their efforts to keep America safe from dangers within and without.

ConsThis job like many within the federal oversight community did not lend itself to cutting edge technology, tools and services.

Pros401k and Stock Plan are not bad. Medical is decent. If you are comfortable with not knowing what you're doing and jumping into a new project there's plenty of room to grow.

ConsManagement does not have morale as one of the things they should be interested in. EG: PMs will repeatedly agree to client wishes/changes without understanding the change or impact on personnel and timelines; then expect the 'slack' to get picked up out of thin air. The only reason projects succeed is due to near heroic efforts of some to get the job done. Turnover is also high for the same reason. Many contracts (new bid and incumbent bid) were lost due to new HUGE overhead costs that are baked into proposals.

Advice to Senior ManagementAt some point you'll have to start listening to the folks that have been telling you for 3 years now since you bought into the defense business with the Stanley acquisition. We're getting underbid and overworked constantly. You're lucky you still have some the people you do.

Fairfax, VA (US)

Current Employee – been working at CGI Federal full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat work environment. The company has many projects to work on. For example, when a certain portion of a contract was lost, management assisted individuals in finding another project to work on within their area of interest. Also, the people that work for CGI are amazing. I have friends to this day that still work there.

ConsWork schedule can be hectic depending on the project you work on, your role, and management. This is nearly a third party perspective of other projects. The project I worked on fostered a great environment for young professionals to develop.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet to know the members of your project better. If you have a vested interest in them, then they will have an interest in helping you succeed.

ProsMy first job out of college, its been good so far. I feel as if I have grown a lot a a professional and learned a lot about the industry. Many different projects to work on, HR is pretty good about helping you move to one that fits your interests.

ConsUpper management could make more of an effort to interact with/ get to know their employees.

ProsNothing much to say here. Infighting, poor management, favortism and nepotism, I could go on and on and on..

ConsWorst place I have ever worked in an almost 40 year working career. Cultural misalignment between US and French Canadian entities-- socialistic philosophies DO NOT work in the US. VERY poor leadership- the fish sticks from the head down. Extremely bad decision to buy a large, failing European company. Can't wait to leave!!

Advice to Senior ManagementI am beyond words. They would not listen anyway.

Lexington Park, MD (US)

Former Employee – worked at CGI Federal full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGreat benefits to employees, the remote locations have a more-family-oriented cozy environment, decent pay, relative stability

ConsToo big for their britches at times, it's difficult to maintain order when there is too many hands in the pot...

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to employees, don't just buy up little businesses to please your share holders and increase your bottom line. When CGI Federal purchased the smaller company, Stanley Associates that I was employed by, we ended up losing the contract I was on since the company-CGI did not have a small-scale business advantage to bid on a Navy contract, given I was in an area where the local economy was made 85% wise by the government contractors, it was a hard pill to swallow, especially when I had been an employee there with the previous company going on 8 plus years. They offered or tried to get me a position in the headquarters location, however, it was going to be the same amount of pay for a 65+mile commute one way. I had to decline.
