Calgary, AB

I have been working at Best Buy part-time for more than a year

Prosyoull be treated fairly with a decent wage and a good amount of hours. plus the discounts are awesome. just be nice toyour co-workers and youll get it back.

Consraises are minuscule and difficult to acquire, Advancement in the workplace is a joke and if you start as a seasonal worker, your training is often minor.

Good not great company at the time

Sales Representative (Former Employee)
Vancouver, BC

I worked at Best Buy part-time for more than a year

Prosgreat co-workers, flexible scheduling for part timers who are still in school, good discounts on certain items

Conspoor management and huge managerial turn over, many co-workers didn't care about sales due to lack of commission.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire higher quality workers.

Product Process Supervisor

Product Process Supervisor (Former Employee)
Vancouver, BC

I worked at Best Buy full-time for more than 3 years

ProsTeam was absolutely together, Management was good and we used to have lots of fun store level.

Constop level management/district or country wide management has to look into things like employee retention. This is the biggest reason why Best buy has a very high attrition level

Advice to Senior ManagementYou can absolutely reduce your operating cost by reducing the amount spend on weekly flyer and signage changes every friday, bring it to a level where you need to advertise only those which are absolutely necessary.

Poor Work Environment

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Best Buy

ProsPros include working with fellow young individuals who share a slight interest in electronics and technology in general.

ConsExtreme pressure on employees to sell overpriced products and services. They offer no commission pay and treat employees like dirt.

Pretty good pay, friendly co-workers, but pressure and restrictive scheduling let it down a bit.

Computer Specialist (Former Employee)
Kitchener, ON

I worked at Best Buy part-time for less than a year

Pros- You start at more than minimum wage, which was good for me coming in with no retail experience
- The job has it's rewarding moments, you have a lot of freedom to dictate the flow with your customers
- Consistent hours, was never found lacking for shifts

Cons- Terrible scheduling, was always two weeks in advance and my supervisor was very inflexible about switching shifts
- Undue pressure to sell service plans, management pays lip service to the experience but focuses too much on the bottom line
- Standarized sales process which can be too inflexible and time-consuming

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more flexible about things, and focus on the experience first to start turning around the negative perception people have about the store

Media Sales Representative

Media Sales Representative (Former Employee)
Markham, ON

I worked at Best Buy part-time for less than a year

ProsEmployee Discount was decent, usually just on accessories.

ConsI worked seasonal so that may have been why I was treated so terribly but older staff would be lazy and push their work onto the new staff, I found myself picking up other peoples slack and even covering more than 2 departments at the same time, I was supposed to be one of four people in the media.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat employees better.

A lot of opportunities

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Lethbridge, AB

I have been working at Best Buy full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat people among the work place, fun and enjoyable demos, Perks (discount), a decent atmosphere.

ConsA lot of untrustworthy managers, managers somewhat not honest with customers purchasing products, no incentive for harder work employees, trust among workers flutters.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive employees more appreciation for reaching numbers.

Great culture but horrible execution

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB

I worked at Best Buy part-time for more than a year

ProsFlexible shifts and the ability to reschedule it at your whim on a weekly basis, lots of extra perks. There is some areas of growth where you can go, but I'd recommend you not to or get your supervisor/managerial experience and leave.

ConsDemanding goals with no compensation (no commission), Best Buy suffers from the "show room" syndrome where people just come to look but not buy. The company itself is going down hill and there's not much a retail associate can do - but they will blame it on you.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe realistic on shoving down your unrealistic goals down your sales associate's throats

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
