I worked at Bechtel full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The pay is great. Bechtel does a decent job of taking employees out to eat, organizing outside of work activities etc. Delivers outstanding service at camp jobs, some of the smartest people in the industry. Company seems to retain long time employees who are helpful to younger employees and share their experiences.

    Cons

58 hour weeks are expected at camp jobs, usually work longer than that. Miss holidays due to being at camp.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great company for engineers and commerce graduates, strong processes compared to competitors, senior managers display leadership mindset, private company with strong financials, place high value on ethics and Bechtel covenant behaviour...

    Cons

Must be flexible to relocate if you want to advance in career, networking with peers and managers is a must to secure potential assignments, large contingent of Senior Managers with old school beliefs and arrogance, general low tolerance for exploring options that are not in line with traditional ways of working, IT systems and in-house tools are not up to speed with changing technologies, hiring processes can be extremely slow....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Explore options with new clients and take risks in negotiating lower bids to secure more work. The company has the processes, mindset and attitude to do the work better than most competitors. This may translate into more opportunities for employees and help the bottom line.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunities to travel and see the world, stable job with opportunities to save money if you are a graduate.

    Cons

Almlost obsolete processes. Beaurocracy. Discrimination based on origin, nationality and gender. Top heavy and filled with self promoting managers unwilling to retire, leaving few opportunities for younger talent to rise to positions of authority and influence or effect much needed change. All the above combine to create a limiting and toxic environment. Ethics are paid lip service and otherwise tossed out the window. HR exists to serve management and save the company money by cutting benefits of the 'little people'. Some good managers do exist but they are a dime a dozen. Three out of five of my line managers have been slave driving sadists.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management should listen to ittle people. Cut through middle management and HR and set up channels whereby employees can give anonymous, objective feedback without fear of repercussions. The company needs to swallow the bitter pill and adapt in order to become a better place to work.
