I worked at Barclays full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The company offers free coffee and tea. Colleagues are cooperative in general. Manager is hardworking as the staff. The CEO seems to want right ship and create a moral atmosphere after some scandals.

    Cons

The company is struggling to keep talent because of multiple rounds of layoffs. Managers have a tough time choosing who to get rid of. They sometimes make the unsavory choices based on favoritism. The manager treated his employees with decency only when pressuring them to deliver projects and did not give credit where credit was due after the projects were delivered successfully. The bank's pay is below average compared to other banks in the i-bank business, to put it generously.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try your best to keep the talent. Fairness and decency are basic values that any company must follow to achieve success.

I have been working at Barclays full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Has a very high proportion of bright people, probably the best I have worked with.
Office is in a great location.

    Cons

The bank spends an inordinate amount of money in developing 'features' which it thinks are innovative and that a major bank needs to do. There is no financial discipline behind these developments. This is incredibly disheartening.

The company actively promotes challenge, which seems to be interpreted by people as 'put obstacles in everyone's way'. Incredibly frustrating

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus on the core business.

    Pros

    Very accommodating of work-life balance

    Cons

The firm just cannot get out of its own way. You have decisions being made by retail bankers in the UK, impacting the investment bank world wide.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Decide if you want to be in the business of investment banking.

    Pros

Really good people working in this entity

    Cons

I worked at Barclays as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

For me location, decent rate of pay and working hours.

    Cons

Lower to middle management did not appear to be on the same page as the corporate hierarchy. Potentially due to either the being unable to implement the overall cultural strategy due to operational reasons. Or, the culture/behaviours have not been properly embedded within all levels of management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read the cons and live the values.
