    Pros

Work with A-list clients on headline deals, great culture, helpful colleagues

    Cons

Exposure to management limited, career development not very highly valued, you feel like another cog in the wheel, etc

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care about your junior employees more, they do the grunt work for you; pay more or you'll lose the best of the best to the boutiques

I worked at Barclays full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting work, not bad remuneration, had lots of opportunities. Strong push internally to embed new values, not just for show

    Cons

Bureaucracy, lack of definition of responsibilities - too many people trying to compete to do the same thing. Move to a 'one Barclays' model making slow progress and moral was very low.
The flat hierarchy and promotion process meant that you could end up taking on much more responsiblity than you are rewarded for and people would work alongside each other with the same role and level of responsibility but different grades

I have been working at Barclays full-time

    Pros

    Corporate bank quite interesting work/transactions.

    Cons

Depends on which department you work, not standardised across bank.
Does not have the prestige of the IB.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Barclays full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The talent (in the areas where you can find it) can rival that of the best banks in the City. Those who are engaged are sincere and hard-working, and there is plenty to sink your teeth into if you like a challenge and can see your value-add. Staff are friendly and want to help. CEO has also made a good start with re-emphasising core professional values at every level.

    Cons

Staff who want to help don't know how, leaving a few people carrying a lot of the load. Better investment in resources (salary, training and career development) is needed. Although there are a lot of great ideas, there is seldom enough time given to implement; changing direction is fairly commonplace, leading to constant upheaval and a sense that management is reacting instead of planning. IT systems need better cohesion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Commit to a strategy and hold SENIOR management accountable for its primary deliveries. Significantly adjust compensation structure in critical support areas relative to the rest of the bank (you are insulating the wrong people). Keep the new values in focus.

I have been working at Barclays full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working at Barclays has so many opportunities. You never really need to leave. It also has fantastic pension, annual leave, healthcare and the pay is pretty good. The bonuses are great. It is a very comfortable place to work. It is quite easy to network and move your way around. Its very 'PC' and friendly. Social scene can be varied. People are generally out of the office by 5.30pm and your work life balance is mostly respected.

    Cons

You have to play the game, rather than just be good at your job. There are so many people that you really have to work smart to stand out/avoid being a number. But everyone is kind and fair and so long as you work out how to play the game, the sky is the limit really. It can become quite stale with very little breadth to roles (i was there 6 years) but i enjoyed my time there and it has set my career up for the future - people really respect the name on your CV.
