I have been working at Banfield Pet Hospital

    Pros

    1. Very flexible with my schedule
    2. Fair starting wage
    3. Excellent wellness plans for (personal) pets - free of charge, even to part time employees!

    Cons

    1. Usually long hours, but that's because of the accessibility for the clinic: we are open when others are not.

Former Employee - Veterinary Assistant in Darien, IL (US)

I worked at Banfield Pet Hospital (more than an year)

    Pros

-Opportunities to learn as a veterinary assistant especially if you are prepping for vet school
-Worked with a great team of people who genuinely cared about their client's pets

    Cons

    -Low hourly pay
-Employees made to push the Wellness Plans (which are overkill for people's pets and usually go unused)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Increase hourly wages to a living wage- many of the people I worked with could barely pay their bills and they were mature adults who consistently worked hard.
-Consider offering benefits to part-time employees, or even just the option of partial coverage.
-The Wellness Plans make Banfield look like they're profit-hungry and production-based medicine never helps anyone. Separate yourselves from VCA and don't push these as hard.

    Pros

Fairly good benefits, accrue PTO all the time plus quarterly PTO, structured training program for new hires, good medicine and access to quality equipment, free wellness plans for employee pets

I have been working at Banfield Pet Hospital

    Pros

We have the best benefits in the Industry. Up to 4 weeks PTO in first year,401k ,Company Paid Short & Long Term Disability, PTO for Part Timers even!!! Free Wellness Plans for 3 Pets!!!Company really does care about associates and Pets. Many managers are promoted from within so it is a great opportunity for growth for many associates working in the hospital if they want to work hard and move up. Many of my friends got promoted this year to management positions. I see so many complain about work life balance but most managers work 40 hours a week and hourly associates work 30-40. That sounds like a pretty great work life balance to me. No one gets benefits like these at a private practice ( at least not the ones I worked at) so it is crazy people complain about them. If you do work a long 12 hour shift, you are normally working only a few days that week so it totally balances out for the nurses.

    Cons

Rapidly Changing and Improving- which is really not a Con, but people who can't embrace or deal with change will struggle here. We are growing very fast and it is an exciting time for the company, but many spend the majority of time complaining and they should go work somewhere else and see what real life really looks like. It would make everyone else's work day much easier.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None right now. I for one appreciate the company and know in this business it is hard work but taking care of Pets and being a part of making this a great world for them, makes me feel valuable. Our company is doing very well so I feel great about job stability as long as I work hard.

I have been working at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Very well structured training programs starting this past year. The days are normally long hours and therefore can interfere with work/life balance. However, you tend to get a 40 hour work week in 4 days and have a few days off every week. Competitive wages.

    Cons

Company tends to be a revolving door, as we have a lot of interns and students passing through.
