ProsThe product that we sell is generally great, and with the right staff it is a very positive environment.

ConsUpper management is very focussed on sales to the detriment of customer exerience. More focus is made on continually providing coupons and discounts to artificially drive sales instead of letting the product and the employees sell it based on the quality and the value it has been assigned.

ProsThe discount for Gap Inc/Banana Republic is awesome. And is even great when extended through the family and friends event. If you’re young there is numerous individuals your age to get a long with and a great way to learn about men’s and women’s fashion. The company was great for work/life balance. It’s an awesome place to learn if you wish to start your own brand/company. Depending on your skill set learning about the opposite sex’s clothing is great for your own personal knowledge. Most managers will acknowledge your support if you perform well.

ConsThe problem with working for Banana Republic is the lack of clear management decisions. Closed door policies, managers who often sat in the offices to avoid the sales floor. An often boring collection of mens clothes depending on location. Lots of emphasis focused on women’s clothing because it sells more. The company used to strive on experience but now it’s all about hitting targets so managers can collect their bonuses. Pay raises are terrible for Sales/Support Staff. Tons of brainwashing and often trying to get all associates to use the same terminology which takes the genuine aspect of customer service out of it. And as of 2011 Gap Inc. is still showing up on survey’s for it’s clothing made in third world sweatshops such as China, Bangladesh and India. But the company boast to support the Boy’s and Girls Club of America and Canada.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt would be great if some managers got off their behinds and communicated with the individuals who bring in the company billions of dollars(the Sales/Support Staff). Promote those who perform well and not those who contact you outside the workplace.

Current Employee – been working at Banana Republic part-time for more than 3 years

Pros- Great discount
- Great staff, and environment

Cons- Favouritism
- As the management team began to switch, there was a clear change in the work environment and culture. There became more pressure to sell, and I felt like I was working too hard for too little
- The style of the clothes remained the same, I saw no change in design and/or material.

ProsYou are in control as a manager. You are given all the required tools, you just need to execute.

ConsDifficult to get promoted.
Theres always other lazy managers that want to sit in the back and avoid the sales floor.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is very difficult to run these 8 million dollar stores. There are lots of tedious responsibilities that make us less productive. All we do is sell shirts!

ProsEmployee discounts are great and bonus plan is achievable.

ConsBonus plan requires certain number of hours, well they would give you way below that and so even if you reach the target, you didn't do that in that many hours.
Plus the management sucks. We ran out of plastic bags. We have more than required number of sales associates at a small outlet.
Training was by self. They don't even test and see if you know everything. It's assumed you know everything

Advice to Senior ManagementManagers play important role in the motivation and development of an employee, so try to select the best of persons to be the manager.
