I have been working at Argo Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, they throw parties and go all out. Liquor, cigars, food, the works decent time off policy. decent lower management.

    Cons

Compensation, Nepotism, Politics, selfish culture, hardly any procedures in place. Upper management is very difficult to please. the lower managers mostly are good, but they cant do much because of the higher management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more than a 3% max raise, give opportunities for real growth, become more interested in your employees than the liquor in the executive kitchen.

I worked at Argo Group full-time

    Pros

Learned from peers, actually liked the improvements of the paperless system (although it took a lot of adjustment and was not perfect.

    Cons

Grim environment with work going overseas when I was there. It was understood that most of the underwriting assistants and some management would be let go but no dates were given. Just shows how conscientious the UWs were because they continued to do their best not even knowing when they would be laid off, but sure that they would be. Management shuffled and reorganized, older workers not getting enough help with the new technology. The overseas workers being trained were hard-working, intelligent people but they did not have perfect American English so much time was wasted trying to fix errors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't know the present situation, but hope that this company learned that outsourcing is not a quick shortcut to profits. Have more respect for your experienced workers with accuracy and experience under their belts. Work on company culture.

I have been working at Argo Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Great coworkers
    Beautiful offices
Good benefits with an incredible employee referral bonus
Upper management gives a lot of freedom to business units to create their own atmosphere

    Cons

    Slow implementation of new practices
Too little regulation of employee relations guidelines. Managers are give a lot of freedom, which can be great with great managers and detrimental with not so great managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus more on employee development.

I have been working at Argo Group full-time

    Pros

International company with businesses in multiple countries; profitable with record revenues in recent years; growth primarily through acquisition

    Cons

Core Values are not applicable. The C-Suite execs are arrogant, dismissive, and don't care about employees. Leadership has no integrity. They don't pay bonuses even though the company realizes growth and profitability. Employees are regularly asked to perform more with little recognition. The company is stuck in last century, no integration or vision for meaningful growth, thus expense rations are out of control.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold yourself accountable to the same standards as you would your subordinates.

I worked at Argo Group (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Amazing co-workers and immediate boss who worked tirelessly to build each other up, provide top of the line service and had the courage to do the right thing; good benefit compensation.

    Cons

Poor top leadership (appointing the incorrect people to key, decision-making positions; misuse of corporate resources, funds and employees; unprofessional behavior of C-level management); company values are only posters on the walls; cronyism is rampant, outsourcing of key customer-facing positions that made this specialty commercial insurance company great was extremely detrimental; all of these things led to a sad corporate culture and was so unnecessary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Board of Directors and C-level management should be changed where appropriate; exit interviews should be taken seriously; input from non-management employees should be valued instead of snubbed.

I have been working at Argo Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some very talented individuals in the organization.

    Cons

    The list is extensive:
    Lack of vision and direction
    Poor change management
Expense ratios are out of control
Executives do not walk the talk, values are just words on a piece of paper, they are not demonstrated
Total lack of trust in the organization
Great talent is walking out the door at an alarming rate
    Micromanagement is abundant
Employees are not treated with respect
"My way or the highway" environment, diverse ideas are not welcomed or considered

I worked at Argo Group full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Could be fun to work there at times. If you are a slacker, you can probably blend in without getting fired due to the mediocrity that surrounds you. Salaries were ok. Lots of office locations if one wished to move around.

    Cons

Poor bonuses. The president of the group can be quite arrogant and is not a real people-person. High expense ratios. Under-performers were not exited out of the company at all. Mr. Watson seems to discourage alternative views and seeks out those who will not disagree with him.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the focus on becoming the biggest insurance company and reduce the expense ratio.
