For Nearly 100 Years
We take so much for granted and we actually have little idea and appreciation for everything behind the scenes which makes electricity available to us 24/7. We have all experienced a power outage, driven down a poorly lighted street late at night or have spent hours working on our computer to lose a document due to a power surge.
Everyone depends on the electrical distributor to provide the products, technical support and delivery to the contractor, factories, hospitals, schools, sporting venues, shopping malls, food stores and our homes. To think that something so significant all began a relatively short time ago…
Steiner Electric is a family-owned company founded in 1916. Steiner Electric is the 35th largest electrical supply business in the country, with eight locations in Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana. We represent many of leading manufacturers in the industry.
Steiner Electric Company offers a competitive compensation and benefits package including health, dental, life and long term disability insurance, vacation, 401K and profit sharing.
We are an Affirmative action/equal opportunity employer. Veterans of the United States Armed Forces encouraged to apply.
As a family run business, Steiner Electric has remained active in the communities in which we serve. Our employees are involved in numerous community building, civiic and cultural activities including:
Steiner Kerman Education Foundation
Harold Kerman always found a way to give back. He founded the Steiner Kerman Education foundation in 2007. Harold initiated the education fund in appreciation for opportunities given to him. College would have been impossible for Harold if not for his aunt’s generosity. She gave Harold the money to attend Jr. College. Harold capitalized on the time afforded him in Jr. College and eventually enrolled in Northwestern University. Harold graduated from Northwestern in 1941. He returned from service in WWII and passed the CPA exam in 1946.
Harold set up the education fund to encourage pursuit. He knew there is always something to be learned. Performance and achievement are good to strive for, but the key is learning from experience, environment, and circumstance. For that reason, The Steiner Kerman Education foundation bases scholarships on an individual’s need and goals. Careful consideration is given to the prospects ability to view the world, “As if your glass is half full.” Perseverance is worth the investment.
The Steiner Kerman Education fund has awarded well over $200,000 in the last 5 years. While most of the monies have gone to individuals for scholarships, some of the money has been given to schools and foundations to initiate that facilities ongoing education fund.
Carol Kerman, the foundation’s proprietor, “Looks for students to have a rich fulfilling life where love and respect abound.” High School students are in a delicate phase of life. The Steiner Kerman Education foundation focuses on fostering positive impact that continues the student’s path to fulfillment.
This Foundation began in 2007 by Harold Kerman, CEO of Steiner Electric Company in Elk Grove Village.
He established this Education Foundation in gratitude for the opportunity given to him and with the responsibility to assist other students with limited income.
Harold Kerman graduated from Von Steuben High School in 1937 during the period of the Great Depression. With the help of scholarships, he was able to attend Wright Junior College and later went on to graduate night school at Northwestern University in 1941 while working during the day. After returning from WWll, he passed the CPA exam in 1946…on the first try.
Harold Kerman passed away this past January 2012. His hopes were for his family to continue offering opportunities to young adults to fulfil their educational dreams. If Harold could be here, this is what he would say:
“Live your life viewing the glass half full. Whatever the situation, do what you need to do and don’t complain. Create a vision, work with what you have, and don’t stop until you reach your goal. Once you have, set another goal. Constantly improving, always be fair, respectful, and have uncompromising integrity.”
The Steiner Kerman Education Foundation has awarded Anthony Bright Newlin from Hobart High School $1,500.00. He will attend Ball State University with a major in Actuarial Science. He finished in the top 15 in his class and will also be receiving the top math student award.
Koats for Kids
Doing the right thing is part of Steiner. Our work with Koats for Kdis was inspired by that single statement, “Do the right thing.” One Steiner employee took the words to heart and started building Koats for Kids collection bins in a Steiner warehouse 10 years ago. These efforts have grown into Steiner being the logistical arm for the Winnebago County Salvation Army’s annual Koats for Kids drive.
These bins collected 1,105 coats in 2011 alone. We also helped give away over 2,300 hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves.
We appreciate the opportunity to serve and are excited to continue our relationship with Koats for Kids.

Chicago Area Homeless
Steiner has been part of Chicagoland Electric Association (CEA) since 1991. Over the last 21 years Steiner has facilitated a Christmas celebration for the Greater Chicago Homeless Shelters, partnered with The Boy Scouts Troop 64, CEA and Comic Relief. For this afternoon, every Christmas, seven homeless shelters receive gifts for the sheltered youths, along with office and home supplies to continue daily operations.
Planning for the event starts every September, like clockwork. First, a hall is reserved. Toys are collected and Santa delivers a gift for every child. The party includes just about everything from DJs to storytellers, mostly, it is filled with hope. People care and things can be better. We are committed to help in making that lasting change.
American Cancer Society’s Walk & Roll
Steiner knows, all too well, the pain cancer causes and, as the founding member of The Chicago Electrical Industry Community Outreach (CEI) organization, has supported the American Cancer Society’s Walk & Roll since 2011, which is the longest running cancer event of its kind. Participants can run, walk, bike or skate while raising money for a great cause.
During our first event CEI collectively raised more than $160,000. In 2014, 24 companies raised over $240,000.
Our most valuable resources are our employees. Our growth and success has been achieved through dedicated and highly knowledgeable employees that have provided our customers with the expertise to satisfy their requirements.
