Beckman Coulter – Why Work For Us?

Beckman Coulter develops, manufactures and markets products that simplify, automate and innovate complex biomedical testing. Our diagnostic systems are found in hospitals and other critical care settings around the world and produce information used by physicians to diagnose disease, make treatment decisions and monitor patients. Scientists use our life science research instruments to study complex biological problems including causes of disease and potential new therapies or drugs.

Hospital laboratories are our core clinical diagnostic customers. Our life science customers include pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, universities, medical schools and research institutions. More than 275,000 Beckman Coulter systems operate in both diagnostics and life sciences laboratories on six continents. For more than 75 years, our products have been making a difference in peoples’ lives by improving the productivity of medical professionals and scientists, supplying critical information for improving patient health and reducing the cost of care.

We value honesty and courage, and strive for excellence and innovation. We have a genuine desire to do the right thing – always. We work in a fluid environment in which flexible responses and accommodating change on a regular basis is important. Much of our work is accomplished in partnership with others and within the framework of large, inter-disciplinary teams that stretch beyond the traditional boundaries of time and geography.

Our employees enjoy a large degree of autonomy and responsibility because we trust them to achieve results. We have a number of global initiatives that have succeeded because of grass roots efforts by a number of our employees. Our employee engagement program has succeeded in large part because of a ground swell of movement at the local level. Our Wellness program has successfully spread to every site in the United States in just one year because of efforts by employees at the site level.

We believe in the principle that work can be accomplished in many ways other than sitting at your desk. In fact, the open design of the new Beckman Coulter World Headquarters is based on that idea. Employees can be seen holding an impromptu meeting at our Coffee House or Coffee Bar over a cappuccino, or gathering for a brainstorming session in our Outdoor Park during a game of ping pong, horseshoes or the putting green. We also have a number of Quiet Rooms in each building whenever employees need to be focused or handle a confidential matter.

We work hard to make sure we reward our employees with competitive and comprehensive benefit packages – so we can add value to their lives and their families’ lives. We provide ongoing support for your personal and career development through our tuition assistance program as well as internal training, conferences and seminars. Our annual Performance Share Plan provides bonus opportunities for all employees based on Beckman Coulter’s achievement of financial goals plus individual performance.

    Application Details

I applied online. The process took 5+ weeks - interviewed at Beckman Coulter.

    Interview Details

My resume was submitted and then sent off to a hiring firm to review, where it took about 3 weeks to hear anything. The contact at the firm requested a phone interview (30 minutes on the nose) and most of it was verifying that I could back up what I said on my resume. The contact said my qualifications should take me to the next round of interviewing. She was extremely helpful and pleasant. It was nice, because after every step of the process, she touched base with me within 24 hours and we ran through what happened.

5 days later, I had a phone interview with who would become my manager for again, about 30 minutes. He was also an extremely pleasant person on the phone (and is in person as well) and he asked some more technical questions to gauge my experience.

I was then brought in for an on-site interview 8 days later, where I was interviewed by 4 individuals, who for the most part asked what my previous job responsibilities were, what the company did, and what I did to contribute. It was mostly them asking the same "types" of questions, and they were all managerial people, so I am betting it was to gauge my personality. The variation came in the questions I asked and the answers I received. Again, they were all very pleasant individuals, and it was the most low-stress interview I have had. I was moving from out-of-state, and they were more than accommodating to describe the area and what they liked/disliked about it.

It then took them 9 days to get back to me with a job offer from when I had my on-site interview, but in the meantime, I could, and did stay in contact with the woman from the hiring firm, and she kept me appraised of the progress the whole time, which was very nice.

Then came the hiring screening process, which was kind of a pain (again, through a third party agency), but you just trudge through it, and at the end, I now have a job that I really enjoy so far.

    Interview Questions
    • Name a time you had an issue or discrepancy with a fellow employee. How did you respond to it and handle it?

This came from the first screening interview with the hiring firm.

I had a set range for a salary that I calculated using my current salary+ a certain percent increase, plus cost of living variation that I believed was fair. I gave them my $5k range, and they offered $1300 over the bottom, so I was happy with it and accepted.
