I have been working at Verizon full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great work-life balance (at least in my division - I've also heard of managers who track their employees down to the minute), telecommuting opportunities are typically available and they have quite a generous PTO policy.
Training is available but you have to work for a manger who will support you and who can navigate the extremely complicated administrative landscape of the company. Having a strong manager is paramount.
Verizon is similar to every other company I've worked for where the executive leadership is very strong with some good to mediocre middle-managers and the occasional "lifers" who have been directors for many years and everyone is wondering what they are actually doing. Plenty of good workers but also a lot of people with the entirely wrong skillsets in some of the positions.

    Cons

Verizon believes in retaining their existing employees, which is a good thing but it also means that some people have spent decades going from IT to Marketing or from Sales to Product being basically trained on the job and not necessarily bringing in the required expertise for the position. The company has a Verizon "bubble" and they believe their technology and processes are the ultimate standard which in turn results in teams spending a lot of time reinventing things that don't really need to be reinvented, without benchmarking first or doing competitive research. They are losing a lot of good talent because young, progressive people feel like they don't fit in with the Verizon inward-looking way. They also have an aging workforce (again, not necessarily a negative, just a fact) and while they are trying to position themselves as a technology company they often don't realize that the technology they are developing is several generations old.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more people with the right experience. Sometimes you find employees with completely unrelated background working in positions that require highly specialized skills which they don't have. This contributes to the company's lagging in the marketplace. Verizon is a great company with great brand recognition and inspiring executive leadership - make sure that permeates all layers of the company.
