I worked at UAMS Medical Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The autonomy of the job was appealling. The atmosphere is extremely academic, just another plus of the job since I learned invaluable experience and knowledge of IR procedures and also moderate sedation which unfortunately is, respectively, a medical specialty and nursing specialty, most nurses are not even familiar with and understamd what IR nurses do in what many refer as the "xray" department. Working with the residents and fellows was a wonderful opportunity because we IR RNs guide them through there years specializing in this field. RN Manager was relaxed but supportive as well, and he often worked "hands on" when we were short staffed nurses. When staffed appropriately, management is rarely seen, which is not a bad thing. But again the RN Manager was great!

Can be very lucrate if you don't mind taking on call responsibilities!

Not too mention best retirement plan I've ever heard. If you invest over 5 through 10 percent of your paychks they matched it according to how much you invest. Eg, you invest 5 then they'll match 5, you 6 then they 6 and so on. Also if you invest 1 to 4 percent they would still at minimum match 5%

Banker hours: 7a to 530p four days per week (or)
    9a to 530p mon-fri.

    Cons

RN management, physicians, and Radiology tech management often gave us RNs very different information about policies and procedures concerming IR RNS which was annoying bc it should be the RN Manager keeping us up to date on these NURSING issues and policies.

ATMOSPHERE: Sometimes very disconnected atmosphere to work in. Often felt like it was a Rad tech vs RN contest on who knew more and so on. Often clichess as well, felt many techs and other RNs teamed up against certain RNs. DEFINITELY have to prove yourself to the staff before they start "letting" you in lol.

Job often extremely busy or sitting around for hours#

Job requires on call duties once per week, and taking call every 5th weekend. Call was either primary or secondary and it was revolving, eating if you had primary call weekend last call weekend then you'd have secondary call the next call weekend.

On call responsibilities allow a nurse to make some real $$ because most nurses will volunteer to give up their call whenever offered. But beware when you're on-call you will likely get called in. Most call wkends I got an average of 10 hrs and at most I was there for probably close to 3p hours from friday at 5p to Monday 7a.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many middle managers telling us contradicting info. But overall very approachable and will Ling to work with you!
