I have been working at The Home Depot part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a job, and some of the individuals you work with are great. SOMETIMES they will accommodate you if you're going to school (but the scheduling preferences often go ignored due to the company's sole interest of profit and cost cutting).

    Cons

    -VERY few full-time employment opportunities.
-Benefits are extremely sparse and require you to pay up-front, which is next to impossible when you're being paid a little over minimum wage and given mediocre hours.
-Management (at least at our store) can not make up their minds and agree on any specific issue. For example, one ASM will come through your department and ask for something to be moved. A DS will come through shortly thereafter and ask you to move said product back. Yet another member of the management team will make his/her presence known and ask why you moved things back to where they were.........and it's VERY common.
-Pay is not the best, in fact, there are several employees at hour store who stand in line at the food bank at least once a month. That in itself is anti-incentive to continue employment with the company.
-Communication is ridiculously fragmented amongst store employees (if you can get the radios/phones to work at all).
-Trying to find an associate with a forklift/reach-truck license is an act of futility and leads to embarrassment and frustration, especially when a customer is standing in front of you waiting the product that happens to be "up in the steel" and all licensed employees are either chatting with other associates or just plain don't want to answer your call (goes with the communication con).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you truly value your employees, you will put yourself in their shoes. For example, empty out your bank account (give the funds to a trusted friend who will not allow you to touch it) except for 50 dollars, and use that 50 to pay for groceries/bills for the entire month after paying rent and any other emergency expenses. Please don't insult your associates by claiming to have "competitive pay", it's insulting, unless you are competing with welfare, in which case it is DEFINITELY a close call. In short, take a serious look at what a lot of your employees go through (side-stepping the ones who are afraid to admit it), and either increase the pay, increase the benefits, or increase the hours. Nowhere is this issue more apparent than those visits from upper-management. The folks who pull up in fancy cars, wearing expensive outfits, and stand around in our smoking area bragging about their vacations and what sort of fun they get up to when their not "dealing" with the store and it's employees. And yes, this occurs frequently at our store. Perhaps a few classes on how to increase moral should be offered, because, frankly, there's a reason behind high turnover rates but I'll be darned if I know who, in a position of management, pays attention.
