    I worked at Staples full-time for more than 3 years


    Worked in Office Supplies and Furniture departments. Managers allowed transferring to multiple other departments as well from time to time (cash, copy, tech etc). Lots of time with customers. Loved building furniture, stocking, and doing planograms. 9-10 hour shifts are normal during back to school season, lifting boxes and climbing ladders (which I liked) but isn't for everyone. Schedule was flexible and accommodating but watch out for being scheduled 6 days in a row when the end of the week comes, especially close to open 9 hour shifts (as long as you let them know they would change it, they usually don't mean to). Upper management dealt with problems well and were very supportive of students and making sure work hours worked with school schedule. It was a great job working part-time and full-time.


    Management advancement is a nightmare. If you want/deserve to become head of your department, you have to take training which will move you all over the province or further. You can never stay at your store. Witnessed multiple people going through it for years, and then the company would just hire someone in management from a clothing store into the position they were working towards. In office supplies/furniture/cash there's really no where to go advance to, management was much harder on the tech and copy department.

    Cons for students: Early summer is where hours are low, because BTS is going to start in july. Early july to the end of August is when you will get all the hours, and not be able to book things off. Celebrate summer early if you're doing this job seasonally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    To experienced upper management (which is awesome):

    Please tell new management to listen to full-time employees when they first start, instead of letting them come in and disrupt the workplace thinking they know more than everyone else. The only bad times I had at the store was when new mid-level management was hired. Also, please do not hire new managers during Back to School season. It's just cruel.
