    I worked at Spectrum Brands full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    All of the "pros" have been abandoned due to so many acquisitions. Company once had a successful history.

    Cons

    Good old boy system of promoting managers. No loyalty or appreciation for years of hard work, service, and increased territory size. Company will resort to "underhanded" HR practices of disciplining employees without even contacting the employee relying solely on a manager's words. Management managed on fear tactics as opposed to edifying and encouraging employees. Had so many managers in a short period of time that didn't know anything about their division that employees were left without resources to answer questions. Customer service was "temped out", thereby causing long term customers to simply give up calling. Way too many "chiefs" pulling large salaries while cutting back on all of the pay structure for those that were actually bringing in the money. Corporate management would "create" jobs for those they felt like were "owed" a favor. Corporate management was clueless and even "deaf" to how the competition was eroding market share. Very slow to respond to any competitive intelligence. Actually launched a program aimed at a competitor requiring the sales force to wear "Duck Dynasty" dime store, elastic beards! How is this professional?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Future managers need to work in/and perform all job functions of the specific field in which they are to manage at least 2 years before being promoted to manage over those with multiple years of direct experience. Peel back the 'layers' of unnecessary managers and compensate those that actually bring in the money and are the face of the company in front of the account base. CEO needs briefed and a better understanding of what actually is happening in the different divisions under his watch. Eliminate "puppet" positions which do not benefit the business.
