Current Employee - Customer Service Representative/Cashier  in  Ottawa, ON
Current Employee - Customer Service Representative/Cashier in Ottawa, ON

I have been working at Sobeys part-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Depending on what department you are in (I am in the front-end working as a customer service clerk/cashier), school life can be accommodated
-Benefits are offered after 1000 hours of work for both full-time and part-time employees
-0.5 cent raise in Ontario for every 500 hours worked
    -Paid and unpaid breaks
-Sometimes you get a free lunch or free snacks
    -Always something new to learn
-The uniform could be a lot worse
-Lots of good managers but a few that are on a power trip
-Lots of other little benefits, etc (that can be found in the employee handbook, probably accessible online as well)
-Gain life experience and skills that will further your career/work and personal life and inspire you to pursue higher education, because you realize that most people who work in grocery stores ultimately hates their lives and they tends to take it out on other employees because they have no one else to talk down to, so that they can feel good about themselves

    Cons

-No say about the amount of hours you get whether it be a little or a lot (hours gets cut a lot with no notification or word from management

-Management does not value the few workers there who wants full-time hours and are reliable and trustworthy to show up on time and do their jobs, instead they rather keep everyone part-time and have everything done half-way

-Management avoids hiring full-time employees like plague

-Not being "allowed" to have a drink with you at the cash (water bottle). Humans are required to stay hydrated, yet Sobeys expect cashiers to drink water only when they are on the brink of desperation, thereby reducing productivity from the cashiers

-Not allowed to wear nail polish, despite the fact that cashiers are touching money all day, one of the dirtiest things on this earth, but no no, nail polish is not allowed because they do not want their cashiers to look well groomed and manicured, instead they should have ragged nails that shows dirt under neath because of the constant touching of various items

-Management does not hire professional cleaners to clean the store, instead they expect employees to clean the store, and while I am not saying employees would not do a good job, there is only so much that an employee can do with a mop, bucket and some paper towel, in comparison to what an actual cleaning company with professional and adequate tools could do. And in turn the store is always constantly failing audits due to lack of "cleanliness" around the store

-Management is constantly hiring high-school kids (so the company can save a few dollars, I am assuming) who does not know the value of a job, these kids constantly quit with out giving any notice, and constantly leaves one or many department short staffed. Every few months there is a frenzy of hiring new people, training new people, having to give new uniform to these people and have them quit because of the lack of hours, due to the fact that management always over hires when they rehire again, so everyone's hours gets cuts to accommodate the newbies who leave anyways, and the cycle repeats itself constantly

-Working the Customer Services desk has many more responsibilities than doing just cashier (selling and redeeming lottery tickets (sometimes as many as 50 tickets per customer), listening to and dealing with customer's complaints as the come in to the store to do returns and refunds, answering and forwarding phone calls that comes to the store (the store does not have automated answering system, someone always answers right away), dealing with customers coming into the store with questions and special needs and need for special assistance, renting out rug doctor machines, booking and logging of the community room for customers, writing rain checks, doing store announcements for on sale items, etc. and on top of that still being a regular cash check out that serves just as many customers as a regular cash check out. Yet there is NO DIFFERENCE IN PAY FOR employees despite the fact that the CUSTOMER SERVICE CLERK does so much more.

-Store policies has lots of stupid rules and requirements, for instance a person can return something to the store without a receipt and as long as we carry the item we will refund the the amount, on to a gift card that they can use in the store or at other stores owned by Sobeys. Working at the customer service desk you have to deal with people trying to scam the store regularly, and repeat customers who return stuff to the store that they bought else where because of this incredibly stupid no receipt policies

-Store does not ever reduce perishables in order to look like a "high-class" store and therefore has lots of food in the bakery, produce and meat department go to waste.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Happy employees make for return customers
-Stand behind your employees and at least pretend that you care about them
-Stop giving customers all the rights
    -Do more surprise audits
-Make it easier to transfer into another department within the store
-Offer "camping" periods where other employees switch departments so they can educate themselves about what the other does and can appreciate and understand the different levels of service that occurs within a store
-Take the time to talk to floor employees as they are they ones that interact with the customers more than any other employees in the store and they are the ones that influences whether a customer will shop there or not
-Better pay for Front-End staff and cashier as they are the ones that deal with all the crap, it's easier for people to pretend to be happy when they aren't just living pay check to pay check
