THE WORST. BEING FAKE ABD BROWN-NOSING IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED IF YOU WANT TO SUCCEED. NO NEED FOR HARD WORK OR COMMITMENT

I worked at Nasty Gal full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

ILL GET BACK TO YOU WHEN I CAN THINK OF ONE

    Cons

EGOTISTIC INMATURE MANAGERS, POOR MORALE, SALARY, POLITICS, INSINCERITY, LACK OF LOYALTY, LACK OF TRANSPARENCY. I can hands-down, without a doubt, say this was the worst company I have worked for to date. This was a great place to start, very motivating, fun and positive, but the novelty wore off quickly, with egotistical self-interested managers that and a lack of commitment to the employer. I dreaded coming into work everyday, it was excruciatingly painful, especially considering at one point it was something I looked forward to doing. The ego is quite evident as this company is completely focused on a top-heavy, which is quite clear. In the hegemonic friend/clique system at Nasty Gal, unless you are a part of this group or on someone’s good side, there is no room for growth and the trajectory is nonexistent. Employee growth is stunted, sabotage of sorts. So many talented people exist at Nasty Gal, yet the top management, whom are not qualified and were most likely brought in by friends, continues to outsource their own friends to fill in higher-up positions rather than promoting well-qualified existing employees. How this kind of misappropriation continues to happen and how the CEO is not privy to this is beyond me. This being said, the ENTIRE design team has been wiped out due to poor choices and the management they selected. Outside of these auspices, promotions or raises at the company seem to only happen at the point when the two weeks notice has been filed, IF management even feel its necessary to hold on to the person. The turnover rate is mind blowing; there is no reverence to its existing family, as everyone is viewed as disposable, with the salaries being below the barometer of acceptable. The company is ruthless and shows no loyalty, it does not matter how much time has been invested, how much work has been put in, if they feel they can replace you, you will be blindly stabbed in the back and thrown onto the streets. If they do not like you, they will do whatever they can to pigeonhole you to leave under your own accord. The mind set is of a day-to-day model rather than spending the money to invest on its own people. Pedigreed directors and VPs are highly coveted, exemplified by the top-heavy model, paying these brand name top dogs high $$$$$alarys, yet leaving barebones for the rest, the back bone that has made the company what it is. Lavish treatment and cliques among the preponderant is quite evident as this is where the bonuses and raises go, denying competitive salaries, but rather allocating the money to the VPs or Director level, with regular “team building” meetings at Soho House (for “leadership” of course), first class plane tickets, and other frivolous spending, which has clearly contributed to its shaky financial state. Management is non-existent, throwing in unqualified and immature people and appointing them to high titles, utterly impeding everyone that they manage, explaining the high turn over rate, everyone is replaceable. Transparency and clarity is as clear as murky water, everything is heard and learnt through the grapevine. The "No A Hole" policy is a complete farce, as everyone in upper management is disguised, in his or her fake demeanor, as an a hole. Being fake is highly encouraged and moving forth in a brown-nosing manner and with a political agenda is the only way one can succeed at the company, no need for hard work, commitment or experience. The way I see the company going forth, I don’t see much hope for it unless the model is drastically changed immediately. Absolute power corrupts ABSOLUTELY.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

GET SOME TRAINING. CARE AND LOOK OUT FOR WHOMEVER IT IS YOU ARE MANAGING. SET THEM UP FOR SUCCESS. BE REAL. Somehow the company thinks its inexpensive low-rate snacks and parties, which are obviously written off, are a perk and therefore are a justifiable replacement to the petty salaries paid to its hard-working employees.
