Excellent institution for medical training with great benefits, but in a small city with harsh winter and little to do

I worked at Mayo Clinic full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There are few hospital systems with the prestige and innovation of the Mayo Clinic, so training here is a unique experience. You get to work with the world's experts in just about every medical specialty and sub-specialty. The salary is excellent in light of the low cost of living in Rochester, MN. Benefits are plentiful and the commute is easy. The culture is strongly focused on providing the best care for each patient.

    Cons

With such a large institution, bureaucracy is inevitable. There are way too many administrators disconnected from the front line clinical care who sometimes make ill-informed decisions that negatively impact patient care and physician satisfaction, even though this is a physician-led practice on the most part. The harsh winters in Minnesota is also something to behold. The bitter cold last from November to March, and it's not uncommon to have single-digit or subzero temperatures throughout the entire January.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut out the unnecessary bureaucracy. Continue to build Rochester to include more diversity in food and culture. Mayo Clinic is Rochester. Make it a "destination medical center".
