Former Employee - Dominos Delivery Driver in Chicago, IL (US)

I worked at Domino's part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Taking home my tips at the end of the night made for a good weekly amount of pocket change and ability to have a full tank of gas all the time.

50% discount on food was nice.

Learning how FRESH the ingredients are really made me feel good about selling the product.
(I previously worked at Pizza Hut - where almost everything is freeze-dried and OLD product)

I love to drive, so this was a great experience in that category.

Exploring the map of my delivery area was nice - getting to know every little alley, court, and shortcut from point A to B.

Teamwork - Some good coworkers who worked together to accomplish everything.

    Cons

Smokers - Almost every single employee hired by Domino's is a smoker. There are a few non-smokers in the bunch, but not many.

While Domino's corporate states that smoking is NOT allowed in the driver's vehicle while on the way TO the destination, the Naperville-Bolingbrook-Aurora store managers all have a policy of "smoke em if ya got em" and - in some cases - even allow drivers to stand in the doorway of the restaurant (or in the back room or bathroom) smoking around the food and oven.

One of the employees who was pregnant smoked like a chimney even.

Then there's the countless customers who do not breathe oxygen anymore - only tobacco smoke. GAH!
And the hotel SUPER 8, where all employees and managers of that chain smoke and could care less that the 1st and 2nd floors are SMOKERS rooms and the 3rd is NON-SMOKING, which makes all non-smokers walk through endless clouds of smoke to get to their rooms.

Yes, smoking is a major problem when it comes to food service. It's everywhere and disgusting.

Besides that, the measly pay is horrible. $2.74/hour while driving. Tips occasionally make it over the "minimum wage" bracket but sometimes not. It all depends on the level of customer we deliver to.

Tips: The wealthy customers with 2 BMW's and a Hummer in the driveway NEVER TIP. The poorest morbidly obese moms who send their child to the door with exact change never tip. The people who actually have worked for a living do tip, but rarely more than 10%.

Management: pretty much, they could care less about the health or safety of their employees. They just want drivers to get on the road and return as fast as possible with the money, so the next order goes out ASAP.

One of my initial training managers told me to NEVER WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT. He said "One, it slows you down when you have to get out of the car. Two, it can trap you in an accident and lock, so you get stuck. And C, all my seat belts have broken when I use them." Yes, he did that 1,2,C thing. and the reason he never used the seat belt was because it was not long enough to wrap around him.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

MANAGERS: Stop the smoking in stores and in cars.
CORPORATE: Enforce the health and safety codes on all your franchisees.
