Former Employee - Store Manager in Worcester, MA (US)

I worked at Cumberland Farms full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    free coffee while you work.
good job if you like kissing behinds and need a gig after retirement

    Cons

Company does not promote from within, Calling the upper management plantation supervisors is on the mild side. Unless you know somebody in the upper echelon you will find yourself working 80+ instead of the contracted 50hours salary.
the company has no real competition, it found a niche that will allow it to grow and expand until it bumps into the market of more serious gas station / convenience chains, and those are 900 miles away from north east.
The upper management is well anchored in the banking / petroleum world so access to money and oil is pretty much a given.
Upper management know how to talk, applying that talk company wide falls on mid level management though so all those nice words get different meaning by the time they reach store level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Base your decisions on performance.
Upper management has no real feedback from store level, mid management is all a bunch the got rapid advancement during last overhaul of the company 15-20 years ago, playing poker with them on the weekends is more important that achieving your goals, getting even a lateral move is subject to mid level management approval. Labor budgets are more a factor who you know than what the store sells, etc, etc, etc

    Positive Outlook
