I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great Work Life Balance. There is a good bit of independence given to employees to develop their space. Most managers are not into micro-management and there is opportunity for job rotation so that people do not get stagnated doing the same thing over and over. Works through consensus building and allows grass root proposals to move for action. Moves decisively, once decisions are made but decision making is a long drawn out process. Margins are still rather high even though the revenue growth has stagnated.

    Cons

The size of Cisco does not allow it to be nimble. Decision making requires many layers of socialization and corporate politics becomes a barrier to being able to be nimble. So instead of figuring out how to do the next big thing, there are many many hours wasted on agreeing on what is the next big thing. Unnecessary complexity is built into the working of the company and finding the right point of contact to get a question answered is a feat in itself. There is also a sense of people taking no accountability for the business outcomes and only for their own tasks. Lately, the organization has become a bit risk averse - so big bold moves are very difficult to make. Promotion, recognition and growth at the lower levels are based on performance but as we move into middle and upper management, it is very obvious that it is handed to people who know the movers and shakers.
