I worked at Arizona Public Service Company as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

A lot of good worker bees in the trenches. Physical Environmental atmosphere is good. Free coffee and filtered water. I experienced decent work-life balance.

    Cons

Management is screwed-up. CEO Brandt is an antique. He has not figured out how to pull the difference silos of the company together to get it to work as a unit. He still does not believe that IT should have a seat at the boardroom table even though everything that this company is doing and will be doing going forward has to leverage IT to be successful. Cronyism is rampant, with many of the managers and decision-makers untrained and/or under-skilled for the position they hold leading to bad decisions. Instead of getting the company's internal systems up to date and appropriate, it continues to cobbles a patchwork collection of excel and word doc forms together to do the job and manipulates head-count numbers to make it look like its productivity is higher than it is. It's ok though, APS is an electrical utility monopoly that is guaranteed a profit no matter how bad the company is run.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in outside consultants that will truly help this company. Executive management has to be changed to something more modern with better insight. Stop trying to put a pretty bow and lipstick on the pig, roll-up your sleeves and actually modernize all systems - not just the CIS. Look first at actually updating accounting, inventory, resource management systems to make them standard, and combine all of the different silos of the organization. Embrace a Enterprise PMO and investing a standardized PPM that actually works for all departments. And last, but not least, make sure that all positions have an approved job description with requirements; that the chosen applicant meets the requirements BEFORE they are placed in the position. Perform a top to bottom review of all employees to make sure they meet the requirements of their job. Implement a true 360 review process to weed-out bad decision-makers.
