    I have been working at Advanstar full-time

    Pros

    Some products leading edge. It's fun to work on top shows and publications. Lots of great people and a company where, if you are very self-motivated, you can learn a lot. Opportunities for advancement are decent. Very good compensation for mid-level roles and above. Good benefits, and work-life balance is mostly good. Santa Monica office is bright, sunny and nice with a casual atmosphere.

    Cons

    Severe lack of communication top down, or when there is communication, it's often confusing and opaque. No training whatsoever. Culture seems to be survial of the politically (or contractually) fittest. Despite lip service to the contrary, everyone works in silos. Internal competition is severe in some cases and cliques riddle the company. Little or no trust amongst staff and no transparency. Constant change with seemingly no purpose: sometimes huge decisions are made by CEO and upper managment only to be changed completely, often at the last possible minute, with no real reason. Very little accountability throughout the company at every level. Stone age technology systems. Enormous amounts of time and energy wasted on a regular basis causing staff disillusionment and burn out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Communicate regularly and clearly to all staff. Stop paying lip service to company mission and start living it. Make informed decisions based on a clear strategy, communicated to the entire team, and stick with those decisions. Adopt a culture of internal teamwork and trust with training and support instead of internal competition. Encourage transparency, creativity and accountability as well as results.
