Math Tutor at Ohio State University

Accepted Offer – Interviewed on Columbus, OH (US) Jun 2011 – Reviewed May 06, 2013

Interview Details Once you take your math placement test to see where you stand going into your freshmen year of school, if your score is high enough, the math center coordinator may contact you asking for you to apply. You will fill out the simple application and they will review and get back to you about the interview. If selected, you go in to the math center for your interview and they will have a one-on-one interview session with you to access your math abilities. In my group, we had to perform a problem on the board for a group of both potential tutors and the staff. Not that difficult though because they know that we are students and this will not be a permanent job.

Interview Question – We had to get in front of the group and solve a random math problem given to us.   View Answer

Negotiation Details – No negotiations took place since it is the University hiring and you get what you get. In saying that, as tutors, we already start off with better pay than most other campus jobs.

Director of Development at Ohio State University

Accepted Offer – Reviewed Apr 15, 2013

Interview Details Initial contact was an informal connection with a recruiter. Application is made by way of their online system, but I also identified and directly contacted the hiring manager. Their process drags on at times and I interviewed with several people, but never more than once with the same person. The primary interview was with a group of staff, including the recruiter and the individual who would supervise the position, along with two others.

Interview Question – It was a standard interview. They used a prepared list of questions. None were overly difficult, challenging or out of the ordinary.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – OSU posts the salary range for each position and this is "firm." I was able to leverage another offer into a slight increase.

Typist II at Ohio State University

Accepted Offer – Interviewed on Columbus, OH (US) Jun 2008 – Reviewed Nov 20, 2012

Interview Details When I first applied to OSU, I submitted a paper application. Several weeks later, I received a call asking me if I would like to come in for a test. A few weeks after that, I was contacted by phone to come in for an interview. I interviewed at the department that was hiring and was hired on the spot.

Interview Question – I think answering the required salary question is always the most difficult. You don't want to ask for more than they are willing to pay but you don't want to sell yourself short either.   Answer Question
