Insurance Agent at New York Life

Declined Offer – Interviewed in Jan 2012 – Reviewed Jan 03, 2013

Interview Details Just went to the interview today, he mainly talked about the company and the kind of people they're looking for.. Told this was 2 step process, with that interview being the first step. Gave me info & online application to fill out if interested in proceeding to next step. He didn't have too many questions for me, surprisingly. It seemed like he was "selling" the job more than interviewing me!

Interview Question – He didn't have too many questions for me, surprisingly. It seemed like he was "selling" the job more than interviewing me!   Answer Question

Reason for Declining – I'm thinking about it, but cautiously.

Actuarial Intern at New York Life

Declined Offer – Interviewed in New York, NY (US) Nov 2012 – Reviewed Dec 19, 2012

Interview Details Phone interview in early October, did not hear back for a while and then was called for an on-site interview set for mid-November. Then took a little over a month to hear back that I was offered the position, for their Westchester campus with 3 other interns north of Manhattan instead of the New York Life Building where the other 10 interns were assigned.

Interview Questions

  • What was your most difficult question you've had to answer today in your interviews, and why?   Answer Question
  • If a pandemic were to arise and much of the population across the nation died from it as a result, what would you expect to happen to our company's sales and what would happen to our profit?   Answer Question

Reason for Declining – I simply did not like New York as much as I thought I would, and had a comparable offer from a consulting firm in a more comfortable and familiar area, although still a major city. It came down to consulting vs. insurance companies, what route I wanted to go in the future and what setting I was more comfortable in, and although NYL offered more specifically the work I was interested in, in the end I couldn't see myself working up there very long and knew I would want to move back. If you are from the northeast area and love it already, I can't think of a reason for you not to accept an offer they give you. It is without doubt a great company to work for, and I have heard nothing but good things from people that have worked there before.

Financial Advisor at New York Life

Declined Offer – Reviewed Dec 15, 2012

Interview Details I was first contacted and had a basic interview with the recruiter. This went fine and then I was scheduled for a second interview with the branch manager. This was a different interview than I normally have. They were trying to sell the company to me and not the other way around. After this I had another interview / informational meeting because the second one was with another employee not the manager because he was busy.

Actuarial Internship Summer 2013 at New York Life

No Offer – Interviewed in Nov 2012 – Reviewed Dec 08, 2012

Interview Details I only got to the first round - a phone interview. I was interviewed by a young actuarial analyst who was in the internship program 2 years ago. It was mostly background checking questions and did not get technical until we got to a part where I explained one of my past project. I could not quite recall the details of the codes... guess that was a mark down.

Interview Question – What is your greatest professional accomplishment?   Answer Question

Financial Advisor at New York Life

Declined Offer – Interviewed in Grand Rapids, MI (US) Oct 2012 – Reviewed Dec 05, 2012

Interview Details Multiple interview process. First Interview was mostly spent talking about previous job experiences in the financial industry. Second Interview was further discussion about the company, the position, and the compensation structure. There was also plenty of time for question and answer in both interviews. Interviews were very comfortable and more of a conversation back and forth rather than the interviewer asking all of the questions.

Interview Question – Given past experience, what qualifies you most for this position?   Answer Question

Financial Services Representative at New York Life

Accepted Offer – Interviewed on Waltham, MA (US) Apr 2012 – Reviewed Nov 26, 2012

Interview Details The process consisted of 3 interviews: The first was very general: "Tell me about yourself." The second was a listening experience: "Let me tell you about us." The third dealt with compensation, then an offer: "Here is how you're paid." Be aware that while there is ample opportunity for high earnings, there is no base salary. You will not receive a paycheck unless you sell, no exceptions. The company hires 1/20, and it generally it takes 1 month for the new hire to find their groove or leave.

Interview Question – All very predictable. "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"   View Answer

Negotiation Details – None. Company policy not to offer a base salary to new agents.
