Supervisory Interview

I applied online and the process took 9 months - interviewed at IAEA in September 2012.

Interview Details The post was advertised on their website and applications done on their website. After a few months a competency-based interview was done remotely. Then a few months letter a competency-based interview done via video-conferencing.

Interview Question – Since this was competency-based interview all the regular questions were present. At the end the panel asked whether I had anything to add that would enhance my candidature. The answer I gave should have been more comprehensive.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – It was basically non-negotiable

Section Head Interview

Section Head

I applied online and the process took 2 months - interviewed at IAEA.

Interview Details Submission-time questions for further screening (online).
A 1 hour written examination
In-person interviews

Interview Question – The questions were very general and I would have expected something more specific. The service management questions were almost non-existent. The written examination was far more difficult and yet somehow easier to answer the questions because they were less about "me" and more about "the work". The in-person interview was all about getting to know me as the candidate.   Answer Question

Program Manager Interview

Program Manager
Vienna (Austria)

I applied in-person and the process took a year or more - interviewed at IAEA in January 2009.

Interview Details The hiring process is slow, takes in most cases about a year, and there are about 200 CVs for every post. First there is a computerized matching based on electronic filtering, then review by the managers, then a panel interview with final selection. Average interview 10 questions in front of a 5 person panel. Note that the visa sponsoring capability of the UN means that you are in competition with a global market.

Interview Question – Standard questions - but focus on what you did (I) and not the team (we)   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – No negotiation - everything is set to UN standards. Be careful - if you are sponsored by the US government (State Department) I have heard comments from them about the salaries of UN employees.
