I have been working at Zep full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Zep is a very laid back, casual work environment. It is a relatively flat organization so you don't experience as much "politics" as you would in larger organization. It's fairly easy to get exposure to leadership and hands on experience. If you're looking for a great work environment and a lot of autonomy, then this would a good company to explore.

    Cons

Many people leave within 2 years because there is no real career path within many of the departments. Additionally, the company strategy is not very well defined, so if you're looking for a very stable/traditional organization with clear career development/training this wouldn't necessairly be a good fit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set a clear company strategy. There is too much channel conflict. Also, there isn't a well defined career path - there is little to no incentitive to progress within your role.

I have been working at Zep full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Commission can be very good for amount of work.
Flexible schedule is great for family time.
Many products are superior to the competitors

    Cons

Difficult to find information for "unusual" sales.
Marketing tokens, mileage, prepaid shipping all come 100% from sales rep's commission.
Products have a high sales cost, compared to other companies.
Shipping costs to customers are high.
Outside sales reps compete with competitors, Zep's other brands in Home Depot/Lowes, etc., inside sales reps, other outside sales reps.
Must generate all of own leads. No way to know if a customer is buying Zep, unless you contact them directly. Often wastes time.
National contracts are not updated on Intranet system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve intranet system. Communicate and email sales promos through that in a single file type. Updated information, national contracts, sales promos, etc. in a single place and similar format would improve communications with outside sales reps.

    I worked at Zep full-time

    Pros

Old, established company, good products, some smart people there

    Cons

Knee-jerk reactions to market fluctuations, they have massive layoffs to show investors they are "serious about cost cutting" then add staff gradually, then another layoff, then more rehiring... rinse, repeat...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about 5 years from now, not 5 months from now and stop treating your valuable, loyal employees like expired bread.

    I worked at Zep full-time

    Pros

The inside sales team had a very strict daily schedule. This was my first sales position and I learned basic sales skills. Steady pay-check.

    Cons

Not much room for upward opportunities. Low commission structure. Every day is exactly the same with not much opportunity

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Atlanta, GA (US)

I worked at Zep full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are opportunities for new people who can bring in their experience from larger companies, and there are good people still at the company.

    Cons

The company has had a lot of changes to its mid and high level management positions. It doesn't matter if it is to cut costs or to eliminate what leadership considers "B" level players, this continues to create non-value added changes within the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would hope that the core of the company's retention and morale, human resources, will make significant improvements in their leadership.
