    Pros

The benefits the company provides are next-to unbeatable. The company goes to great expense to offer their employees some of the best options.
    Some of the benefits include:

On-site locker rooms & exercise facility
Excellent health, dental, and vision insurance at relatively low-cost to employees
    Free STD & LTD insurance
    $50k GTL for employees
    Free parking
VERY generous PTO policy (4 weeks, starting out)
High focus on work-life balance with opportunities for WAH (Work at home)
corporate policy to match employee gifts to non-profit charities
Strong focus on recycling (each cube has its own recycling bin)
Open-Door policy is strongly encouraged, complete with a 3rd-party hotline for reporting questionable treatment and/or behavior
Professional Keurig machines in each breakroom
Flexible work hours (depending on which department you're in)
Well-established and functional performance measurement tools
Each year the company sends approximately 300 of their top-performing employees to Disney World for free
Great incentive program (employees can recommend rewards for fellow employees for great work and/or teamwork)
Strong emphasis on team-work (to the point that sometimes, interaction with your teammates ranks at or above on your performance review than your actual work quality)
Strong encouragement to develop yourself, both professionally and personally

    Cons

Career path can sometimes be difficult for advancement
    Likes to re-organize
    Layoffs every couple years

    Pros

I've worked with Unum almost 8 years in 2 different depts. and several different roles. I love it here and (as of today) hope to be a lifer. There is an excellent culture, community involvement, encouragement to volunteer, focus on personal development, outstanding benefits, focus on continuous improvement, and we provide an excellent product.

I started at the very bottom as a call center rep and have worked my way into management in an operational area. I was given opportunities to prove myself, received valuable input and feedback to assist in my development, and rewarded for doing a good job.

As with anywhere, there are always those with a grass-is-greener mentality. There are always complainers (I've seen some of them here), but they would complain no matter what company they work for. We see many of them leave Unum, only to return months or years later when they realize how good Unum actually is.

I'm sure I sound like a company fanboy...and I am. But it's only because of how good the company has been to me.

    Cons

Too conservative in business strategy, need to take more calculated risks and act faster on them. While I don't want to see a swing too far in the opposite direction, in a fast-paced world Unum often takes too long to bring a new product or service to market. Need to be more proactive rather than reactive to the market.

    Pros

It was great place to work. I can't tell you how much I learned and grew as a professional at UNUM. It's the best place I ever worked. I was a manager and I had a great group that reported to me, they were hardworking and professional 100% of the time. My peers were top notch and some of the best in the business, and even though I didn't see eye to eye with my director, he was a good manager.
The pay was good, great vacation, flexible work arrangements, fantastic bonus, I can't say enough about how great it was working there. I must of suffered a "brain fart" when I decided to leave, because it was an awful decision on my part.

    Cons

I hated the performance review process. You had to have a certain % in each bracket including "do not meets" which was awful. When you take time to work with people and put together a plan and they ALL are meeting or exceeding their plan, how are you going to pick someone to fall in this bracket just so your department is showing a bell curve for the performance plan Having to do this honestly keep me up at night. I spent time with my employees trying to help them develop and grow and then I had to pick someone just so I'm showing a poor performer even though they really weren't. This was a nightmare for me.

    Advice to Management

Drop the performance review curve and let the managers rate the employees on how they really perform. You have a lot more satisfied employees and the relationships between the employees and managers would be better.

    Pros

Unum's leadership development program is the best in the industry. The program gives young adults exposure to senior leader mentorship and offers an indepth tour around the company. Associates complete 3 rotations in different areas of the corporation for 12-18 months each. Upon program completion, placement into a director level role is the norm.

    Cons

Rotations sometimes require temporary relocation among company headquarters. While a great opportunity, this can be difficult for colleagues with spouses or young families.

    Pros

Incredible company with even better employees. Ample opportunity for professionald growth and development. Huge commitment to the communities in which the company operates. Good benefits package - including paid time off, retirement, health, vision, dental, etc. Also provides employees with paid time for volunteering! ACCESSIBLE senior leadership team - see them regularly in the hallways and they always remember names and say hello.

    Cons

As with any company that operates across multiple geographical locations, it can be challenging to adjust to slight cultural differences between sites. While some departments offer great flexibility when it comes to work schedules (build your own daily schedule around core business hours of 9-3, flexibiltiy for occassional work at home arrangements, etc.), there is some work that could be done for more consistency across departments and sites within the company
