ProsExciting, fast-paced environment. Lots of opportunities and learning and advancement. Great people in IT!

ConsCompany is going through transformation to adjust to market realities - that is a good move but sometimes it causes people to flee and we have lost some great talent!

Advice to Senior ManagementGreat to have visionary leadership - keep up the transforming!

ProsThe internship wasn't highly structured like some companies - meaning that if you wanted to learn more about the company, meet people, and get noticed -- you actually had to work at it. In my opinion this is a good thing - it reflects the "real world". A lot of internships are task based, but if you do a great job at that task you definitely have the opportunity to expand your horizons. (communicate goals early on with your manager)

Great company to intern at, unless you feel the need to have your hand held. If you want to have your hand held go work for Cargill, CH Robinson etc.... but you will be waiting in line for promotions if you are hired behind the 30 other people hired the year you were.

Cons-Older workforce, can be difficult to come into as a young person.
-Slightly boring culture depending on the group you are with.

Advice to Senior Management-Corporate departments are extremely separated, seems like nobody talks to each other. Lots of opportunities for improvements if departments communicated more.
-Tons of manual work and reliance of Excel... again - lots of opportunities for improvements. Needs to be an IT consultative department/business function.

ProsGreat company for professional development and opportunities for career growth, especially if you are willing to relocate. Save-a-lot side of the business is target as it's growth agent.

ConsCompany has large debt load and is in transition to discover what it wants to be moving forward. Current focus is on Save-a-lot sector which could have negative impact on retail and wholesale sectors.

Advice to Senior ManagementDetermine what business you want to be in - conventional retail, discount retail or wholesale distribution. If the answer is all 3, then develop compelling reasons and marketing plan that appeals to your ultimate consumer and allocate resources to get the job done. Minneapolis is different from SoCal, Midwest, and Northeast. If not, divest unwanted assets. ELIMINATE non-value added headcount.

ProsSuperValu tries hard to recognize those who excel within the Company, while at the same time congratulating every person on his or her individual merit. They succeed in finding new and interesting ways to make everyone feel like a family, and their zero tolerance policy for misbehavior/misconduct ensures that each employee walks into work each day feeling good about working with the Company. Does it work all the time, every second? No. The continuity comes from each associate to make the weakest link become the strongest, and SuperValu helps each person realize that potential.

ConsI work especially hard at my job, but for the level of skill one obtains and professional quality one absorbs, it still will not gain one a high-earning salary if it's not coupled with a bachelor's degree or higher. The Compay is always willing to promote within, yet their salaries do not offer all that much at store level. One has to enter the Corporate sector in order to gain that level of earning power.

Then again, money doesn't buy happiness or peace of mind, so, money issues aside, there are no other significant downsides of working for SuperValu.

Advice to Senior ManagementWe need to RECOGNIZE ASSOCIATES more often! Not in a BIG way. In small, incremental ways. The kind that slowly, but surely boost an associate to full working potential. I receive much "congratulations" on my own work, but many of my colleages complain of feeling under-appreciated. That's not fair, and while I give them my appreciation, it's not the same if it doesn't come from the "higher-ups." I'm simply a supervisor. Hearing a sincere, and prompt "GREAT JOB" is worth more than some might think to a fellow colleage (and in my world, we're ALL fellow colleagues!).

ProsStrong management team, solid leadership, empoyee feedback solicited on a regular basis, feel like part of team, leaders are accountable, training and career development efforts are top notch, not afraid to invest in their people, salaries are very fair. Even though their stock has plummeted, so have many other companies in the Grocery industry. I think SUPERVALU will continue to be in the top 3, good or bad economy.

ConsA large company can come with beauracy, decision making processes can be slow at times. They are perhaps a little too focused on the number of projects put through the pipeline, rather than on the quality and ROI of those projects. With Paul Singer as CIO this will most likely change for the better though.

Advice to Senior ManagementAlways treat employees with respect and dignity.
