I worked at Rockwell Collins as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Good place to work in terms of work-life balance, no expectations of staying in the office past regular hours. Coworkers were friendly and helpful and took time out of their day to mentor me (an intern)

    Cons

Working as a software engineer I felt like there was not a lot of focus on using better tools -- for example, most teams are still using CVS for source control

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time

    Pros

A lot of benefits for permanent employes. Company cultivates a very good relationship with other employes from same or other levels. Company offers good opportunity for technical engineering development - not best in the market though.

    Cons

Aerospace market brings challenges to all companies in the market and Rockwell Collins suffers that too. Stress and challenge level might be higher then expected for USA market. Leaving in Cedar Rapids might be challenging for young person with no family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management level should be kept at acceptable level that does not result in big overhead for engineering activities - what is really being a challenge in the market nowadays. Big company asset is on the engineering side and that has to be preserved for long term success of the company.

    I worked at Rockwell Collins

    Pros

good cross matrix organizational, COEs and program management
They do their own manufacturing, not all 3rd party like many others

    Cons

Continuous focus on finding someone who is different, when you hire, they tell you what color or gender you have to hire. Over and over. Gets really really frustrating. Can't we just the best qualified candidate regardless of race/sex/gender/bias/ whatever agenda of the day?

Former Employee - Senior Electronics Technician in Cedar Rapids, IA (US)

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed the challenges and the ability to move from department to different departments. Cutting edge GPS groups were great to work for.

    Cons

Too many middle managers. The company relies on SAP and LEAN too much. Another misstep that I saw when I worked there was the integration of the company's outsourced materials that were too vital for the product that we were forced to use. It seemed that nobody ever wanted to admit when they made a mistake. Finally, the nurses station group has too much influence on employees' job status. They should stick to making sure people are healthy and stay out of human resources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees and not to the status quo. And make sure that the final product's quality is more important than putting out a poor product on time so the stockholders get an extra two cents per share of stock.

    Cons

It is a good experience working at this company

Former Employee - Engineer in Hyderābād (India)
Former Employee - Engineer in Hyderābād (India)

    I worked at Rockwell Collins

    Pros

Personal growth is pretty good atleast to me, I joined as an Intern, offered full time role upon the internship completion, promoted to next level in 6 months and to next level in one year.
Salary is decent compared to most of the people who start fresh from college.

    Cons

Work-life balance is kind of not so good.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins

    Pros

From day one I have been treated very well by RC. I work at a location by myself with very little supervision and I'm free to set my own schedule.

    Cons

Initial salary was low in retrospect but has since caught up to the average. My base pay was lower than some of the mechanics I was supporting, but with allowances and yearly bonus it is not as bad. Not a lot of room for promotion. They put multiple projects under one manager to stay lean, but this does not allow for any upward mobility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being so cheap when recruiting talent.
